Football bet of the day

The FIFA World Cup is into the knockout stage and Monday brings with it a couple of matches from the round of 32 that have convenient times for UK viewers. The first sees record five-time champions Brazil face Japan before four-time victors Germany are in action against Paraguay in Foxborough (4:30pm local time/9:30pm BST, BBC One).

It's from this clash that I have plucked my Football Bet of the Day, and you'll find all the details below.

Football Bet of the Day - 29 June 2026

Germany vs Paraguay Odds

Betfred is heavily favouring Germany to win this tie inside 90 minutes with a price of 3/10. Die Nationalelf have won seven of their last eight competitive matches.

The draw can be backed at 9/2, which was the outcome in Paraguay's final group-stage game against Australia. Los Guaranies are a 17/2 bet to stun Germany in regulation time.

Five of Germany's past six outings at the World Cup finals have gone Over 2.5 Goals, which can be backed at 8/11 on this occasion.

As usual when it comes to this column, I was tempted by the player markets, particularly with a look at Germany striker Deniz Undav for a goal. Then I remembered something - Both Teams To Score - Yes.

This selection has been a winner in all three of Germany's outings at the tournament so far, while it's struck in six of Die Nationalelf's seven appearances in 2026.

This may seem a big task given that Paraguay are the team we would need to breach Germany's defence, but this has been a successful bet in four of their previous eight matches.

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • BTTS - Yes has landed in 6 of Germany's 7 matches in 2026, including all their group stage fixtures
  • There have been goals at both ends in 4 of Paraguay's past 8 outings
  • Each of Germany's past 6 outings at the World Cup finals have seen both teams get on the scoresheet

The stats for Germany highlight this market as a sensible pick for the Bet of the Day. It has after all, been a winner in each of their past six outings at the World Cup finals and I think this trend will continue on Monday.

Paraguay have mustered just two goals in North America so far, so there is an element of risk to this selection, but Germany's backline isn't secure. Julian Nagelsmann's side may look good going forward but there are still question marks over the back line.

At the centre of this is veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who was convinced to come out of retirement to feature at the World Cup. The 40-year-old didn't look sure of himself against Ecuador last time out, with a few notable errors in the defeat to La Tri.

Paraguay should've paid close attention to this detail and their priority in Foxborough should be to put Neuer under some early pressure. If they manage this, I think there's a strong chance we'll see both sides on the scoresheet here.
