Football Bet of the Day: Porto to get back on track defensively

It might be Monday but we are blessed with a few different options when it comes to our football fix. Port Vale host Stockport County in League 1, while Real Betis face Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

But it is Portugal I am interested in for my Football Bet of the Day as Porto look to respond after their surprising Uefa Europa League defeat against Nottingham Forest on Thursday. They travel to Moreirense, with the game kicking off at 20:15 GMT.

Moreirense vs Porto Odds

Moreirense have the best home record in the division, having won all four outings here in the Primeira Liga. They are an appealing 10/1 price to hand a first league defeat of the campaign upon Porto.

Porto have also won all four of their away trips in the league and they are the 1/4 favourites to collect the three points. The stalemate is on offer at 9/2.

Samu Aghehowa has scored five goals in seven league appearances for Porto and he is the favourite at 9/10 to score anytime on Monday night.

Porto were left stunned as their trip to Nottingham did not go according to plan. They fell victim to the Tricky Trees' new manager bounce with Sean Dyche winning his first game in charge.

The goals were both from the penalty spot, though, and the Dragons largely did well to nullify Forest from open play. As their first loss of the season, the Porto players may be caught off balance for the first time this term, which their hosts Moreirense will look to capitalise on.

This is going to be another tough away test for the visitors, with the home side boasting the best home record in the division. But, equally. Porto themselves have the best away record.

So on paper at least, this is a very exciting battle. I am expecting a tight affair as a result, with this being as much a test for Moreirense as it is for the visitors. The big difference is that Porto have conceded just once in their opening eight fixtures, while the Green and Whites have been breached 11 times.

So into my Bet of the Day, and it may seem obvious but I do think Porto to win to nil has value again. After Thursday's disappointment, I can imagine an emphasis being put on the Dragons being defensively solid on Monday night, especially given their hosts' excellent form.

But I doubt this will faze Porto because they have come through every away test they have faced in the league with a victory. Their own defensive record is to be applauded and this will no doubt make life tricky for Moreirense's attacking players.

It is also helped by the fact that the home side are still sweating on the fitness of their top scorer, Guilherme Schettine, who has struck five goals in seven appearances in the top flight. The 30-year-old has missed his team's last two matches and his attacking talents would be a sore miss against the best defence in the league.

On the flip side, Porto's leading scorer, Aghehowa, has the same return as Schettine, and he will be primed to play a big role in this contest.

I think backing Porto to win to nil is worth backing here because it has been a successful bet in six of their seven league wins this term, and it is eight from 12 across all competitions.

Boss Francesco Farioli has them organised brilliantly at the back and in a game where they need to ensure they are not giving away chances, I believe they will rise to the occasion.
