Football Bet of the Day: Paraguay can answer the call

Friday’s football action is plentiful with Championship action, a La Liga game and a Bundesliga fixture, but we are heading to South America in search of some value. 

My favourite South American country, and footballing destination, is Paraguay. The home of Roque Santa Cruz and Jose Luis Chilavert has caught my eye again for the Football Bet of the Day.

This is a great price for an away win in my opinion. For those of you not familiar with the structure of the Paraguay Primera Division, the 2025 season is split into two, the Apertura (opening) and the Clausura (closing). 

We are now 18 games into the second season of the year, meaning there are just four games left before the campaign comes to an end. It also means we have plenty of data and form to go off, and that brings me to Friday’s selection. 

General Caballero JLM host Deportivo Recoleta (20:30) having risen steadily after a dreadful start to the Clausura. Humberto Ovela has seen his side win one of their last five in the league, although that came last time out as they beat Sportivo Ameliano - the team that sit second-bottom.

The reason I want to oppose them here is because their league season is petering out, but they still have a chance of major success in the Copa Paraguay. Their fixture list looks rather congested and given this game is sandwiched in between their last game on Monday night and their cup semi-final on Wednesday, they may not have full focus on the league.

There’s a fair argument that Ovela will rotate heavily for this game and instead focus on cup glory on Wednesday night. It means the price on Deportivo Recoleta, who already have an extra day’s rest on their hosts, really appeals. 

Recoleta have been in decent form of late. Only the top two, Cerro Porteno and Guarani, have beaten them in their last seven outings and both of those were narrow away defeats for the side placed in sixth, two points better off than Friday’s opponents. 

Deportivo Recoleta have scored 28 goals so far, while General Caballero have only managed 20 in 18 league outings, so I think the price on an away win is absolutely massive. Odds of 5/2 about Deportivo Recoleta beating General Caballero JLM is Friday’s Football Bet of the Day.
