Football bet of the day

I'm on a roll when it comes to our Football Bet of the Day column. Each of my past three selections have landed, so I'm feeling a bit of pressure ahead of Saturday.

My attention turns to the Championship, particularly a big clash involving teams towards the bottom of the table. Portsmouth host Leicester City at Fratton Park (12:30 BST, Sky Sports Main Event), with the Foxes four points adrift of safety with four games remaining.

Portsmouth vs Leicester Odds

Leicester are 21/10 to end their five-game winless run in the Championship.

Three of the Foxes' previous four outings in the second tier have been draws, with the stalemate here marketed at 23/10.

Under 2.5 Goals has struck in three of the past four matches for both sides ahead of this clash. It is marketed at 8/11 on this occasion.

But for my Football Bet of the Day, I am backing a Portsmouth win at 13/10, which has an implied probability of 43.5%.

It was not so long ago that people were concerned about Pompey's form in the relegation battle. Before their current win streak, they were eight matches without a win, suffering five defeats in that time.

So on paper, their last two matches against Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town - two promotion chasers - their chances for victory were slim. However, John Mousinho's side showed great character in both fixtures to come away with six points to move them four points clear of the bottom three with four games left to play.

On the flip side of this, you have Leicester who are four points away from safety. Gary Rowett has had a hard time of it in trying to steer the Foxes away from trouble since joining in February.

The experienced Championship coach has built his best teams at this level with players who have character and are capable of putting their bodies on the line. Something needed in a relegation battle, which Pompey have been demonstrating - but not Leicester.

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • Portsmouth are on a 2-game winning streak, beating promotion-chasers Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town
  • Leicester have lost 8 of their previous 16 Championship fixtures

Earlier this week, Rowett admitted in his pre-match press conference: "We probably don't really have a squad who are designed for a relegation battle."

It's not surprising given how Leicester fared in the Premier League last season. It comes across as a dressing room with plenty of egos, but no unison, which leaves the Foxes on the cusp of a return to League 1 for the first time since 2009.

The Foxes have had very little success on the hunt in recent months. They have just one league win in their previous 16 outings, losing half the games in that time. The latest came at home to Swansea City last time out.

Leicester were beaten by a single goal, which came from them giving the ball away from their own counter. It was something that summed up their season and their current predicament.

Their players should be fresher than Portsmouth, who were in action on Tuesday, but I don't see that making a difference given where both teams are at the moment out on the pitch.

A win for Pompey here has the potential to secure their Championship status for another year. In front of a pumped up crowd, I am confident the hosts will profit against this fragile Leicester side.
