Football Bet of the Day: Back Real Sociedad in goal-fest

Sunday’s football action comes thick and fast, but I’ve taken a look over at La Liga for the evening kick off between Athletic Club vs Real Sociedad (20:00 GMT). 

It’s 14th vs eighth, and I’ve spotted some decent value in Bilbao for our Football Bet of the Day.

Pellegrino Matarazzo has done a phenomenal job since arriving as the new Real Sociedad manager just before Christmas, and his side are playing with a level and verve and aggression that is generating positive results. 

In fact, since the American-born coach walked through the door, Sociedad have gone unbeaten, winning three and drawing two of his five league games in charge. The recent run of wins has been mightily impressive too, Txuri-urdin have won their last thre La Liga outings on the bounce, and they progressed to the last-eight of the Copa del Rey on penalties after a 2-2 draw with Osasuna. 

All in all, Real Sociedad are looking like a superb side right now - and their last two home games have been won despite having a man sent off. The 2-1 success over league leaders Barcelona was eye-catching, while they then beat Celta Vigo 3-1 despite having a first-half red card. 

Goals are also a feature of this side, at both ends. Their last eight games in all competitions have seen both teams find the net, so I’m happy to back them to win and BTTS for today’s Football Bet of the Day, especially when we look at their hosts. 

Athletic Club have lost their last four games in a row, and three of those have been by a scoreline of 3-2. Both teams have scored in seven of their last eight outings and they look to be a side that cannot defend right now. Sporting CP came to town in a chaotic Europa League clash and scored a late winner, and I feel Real Sociedad are in a good place to do something similar, especially with Mikel Oyarzabal in good form.
