Football Bet of the Day: Carabao offers good value

Tuesday’s football action is far-reaching, as the Uefa Champions League group phase gets underway. With the new expanded league system, the matches in the early knocking of Europe’s premier competition just aren’t as important as they used to be. For example, eventual champions PSG finished 15th in the league phase, amassing 13 points across eight games last season.
You don’t have to be very good to qualify, so it makes me slightly wary of backing even the favourites in these opening group matches. Instead, I’ve taken a look at the next round of the Carabao Cup for Tuesday’s Football Bet of the Day.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Grimsby Town Odds
Sheffield Wednesday have been overvalued in almost every league game they have played in the Championship so far - certainly since taking a shock lead away at Leicester City on the opening day. All the excitement and novelty around that backs to the wall performance, which ultimately ended in a 2-1 defeat, has now dissipated and with the transfer window shut and Dejphon Chansiri still in charge, things look bleak.
Bristol City were around EVS to beat them at the weekend and the away side duly did that comfortably, racing into a 3-0 lead at Hillsborough and preventing the hosts from having a single shot on target.
The first XI, even with the senior pros included, isn’t anywhere good enough to stay in the Championship this season, with youngsters such as Bailey Cadamarteri, Gabriel Otegbayo and Charlie McNeill still with plenty to prove when it comes to men’s football.
Despite their heroics to cause a shock against Leeds United and progress to this stage, I don’t think there is any value in backing them to win, and will instead recommend backing Grimsby Town to take the victory in this away game (19:45, Sky Sports+).
We all saw what they did to Manchester United in Round Two, and they’ve continued their strong performances in League 2, where they now sit fifth. David Artell’s men are well-drilled, strong at set-pieces and have actually got a competitive squad as we saw when they drew 2-2 with Man Utd in normal time despite making changes.
Barry Bannan is unlikely to start at his age in this type of match, while if Henrik Pedersen makes too many changes then we can expect a severe drop-off in quality from an already poor first XI. I think Sheffield Wednesday, if they have their best team out, are a mid-table League 1 team right now. If you add a few changes into that, they slide down further and it is not unthinkable that high-flying Grimsby can get another victory.
I think we are getting a great price on the away win here at 2/1, with Grimsby wanting to write another chapter in their blossoming Carabao Cup adventure. Tuesday’s Football Bet of the Day hopes that the Mariners can produce again in front of the cameras.
