Football Bet of the Day: Paraguay catches the eye

We’ve got more Euros excitement coming our way on Sunday, but you know the drill by now - we are looking further afield in search of some value.

Obviously, I’m heading to Paraguay in search of more joy, as their Clausura (closing season) begins. Check out Sunday’s Football Bet of the Day down below.

We are at the start of a new campaign after a month off in Paraguay as the Apertura came to a conclusion at the start of June. Now the second part of the season, the Clausura, will take place, with all teams starting again on zero points before facing off against each other twice in the usual format. 

Olimpia will get their second season of 2025 underway with a home tie against Club Nacional, and they are strong favourites to get the three points. I do understand that, given they finished fifth in the Apertura, just 11 points away from the title, while Sunday’s opponents finished eighth.

However, I’m not quite as convinced that the table we saw in the first half of the year offers a true reflection of these two teams. I’m far more interested, heading into this fixture, in the recent form, and that paints a very different picture indeed. 

Olimpia may have finished fifth, but their end to the season was very poor. They've won just one of their last nine competitive matches, and that came against San Antonio Bulo Bulo - a poor Bolivian outfit that they beat in the Copa Libatadores.

In the league, they failed to win any of their last five, falling away from title contention in dramatic fashion. They ended the season with four draws on the bounce but it doesn’t feel like this is a team on the up at this present moment. I’d have more faith in them after the break if they hadn’t also been hammered by Racing Club in a tune-up friendly.

I’m not happy backing them at a short price, so let’s look for value with the away side, Club Nacional. As Olimpia have struggled, Nacional ended their campaign with a flourish, winning three of their last five and scoring plenty of goals in the process. Their only recent defeat came against a Trinidense that should challenge for the title this term, and they could cause a shock here. 

Nacional won their final game of the season 4-2 away, while they also boast the better of the head-to-head meetings in the Apertura. They beat Olimpia 1-0 away from home, while the home game ended 1-1 after both teams were reduced to 10 in the first half. Another spicy encounter awaits here, but I think Nacional offer massive value when we assess both outfits.
