Football Bet of the Day: Libertad set to struggle further?

With England in a European Championship final on Sunday, and pre-season now in full swing, our footballing offerings are limited on Saturday. Once again then, for our Football Bet of the Day, I’m turning my attention to my favourite South American country - Paraguay.

Read on to find out where this one is heading.

Football Bet of the Day - Saturday, July 26

  • Trinidense to beat Libertad to nil @ 9/2

We’ve got an absolutely corking match coming our way from Paraguay on Saturday night (20:00 BST), as Club Sportivo Trinidense host Apertura champions Libertad at Estadio Martin Torres.

If you’ve been reading some of my football previews over this summer, you’ll be aware that I’ve taken quite the shine to Trinidense, and they’ve delivered us a fair few winners. Unfortunately their own winning run came to an end last time out as they drew 0-0 with Guarani, leaving them on seven points from three Clausura fixtures so far.

Trinidense vs Libertad Odds

It’s been a brilliant recent run of form for the club from the capital, and they are now unbeaten in their last eight league matches stretching back to the Apertura, winning six and drawing just twice during that time. It took them up to a fourth-place finish last term, and this season I’m backing them to have a terrific campaign - potentially even going as far as suggesting they could win the title this term.

They are the form team in Paraguay right now, and even though statistically they struggled last time out, they managed to secure a draw away at a team that finished four points above them in the Apertura earlier this year. Trinidense are looking in fine fettle right now, and the same cannot be said for champions Libertad.

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • Libertad have failed to score in their three Clausura matches
  • Trinidense are unbeaten in their last eight games
  • Libertad have won two of their last 12 league games

I’ve got absolutely no idea what has gone wrong for them over the short summer break, but they’ve returned as a shadow of their former selves in the Clausura. They won the Apertura fairly comfortably, picking up 44 points from 22 matches to finish four points clear of their nearest challengers Cerro Porteno, however a lot of their good work was done earlier in the campaign.

They won just two of their last nine league games as they stumbled to the title, and their goalscoring completely dried up as they managed to score just six goals in those final nine. That isn’t good enough for a team that won the league and worryingly, it has continued into the first three matches of the Clausura.

Today's Football Fixtures

Libertad - reigning champions let’s not forget - have picked up just one point from their opening three games of the new season. And guess how many goals they’ve scored? Zero. Not one. Their attacking fluidity has completely deserted them and that means their total record stretching back to last season reads two wins in their last 12, and an average of 0.5 goals per game.

That sets alarm bells ringing in my head as clearly this is a long-term issue for Libertad to try and solve. They don’t seem able to get going in front of goal and yet, they are still favourites to win this game which gives us the chance to back Trinidense at a big price. The hosts are more than good enough to edge a low-scoring affair, so let’s take a risk and back them to add to Libertad’s woes and win to nil on Saturday at a price of 9/2.
