Football Bet of the Day: Crunch clash at the bottom in Paraguay

Friday offers up some more European Championship action as the quarter-finals continue, but you should know that we are heading for South America yet again for our Football Bet of the Day. 

I’ve recently become infatuated with the Paraguayan Primera Division and once again that draws my attention for today’s selection. 

My attention in the past has been slightly higher up the Paraguayan Primera Divison, but on Friday night we’ve got a crunch clash between two relegation candidates to look forward to as Club General Caballero host 2 de Mayo at Estadio Hugo Bogado Vaceque (22:30).

Now we are only two games into the Clausara - the second season of 2025 in Paraguay - but after a month off, Club General have had a pretty poor start. They lost 3-1 to Club Cerro Porteno before Sportivo Luqueno beat them 2-0 last time out to leave them bottom of the table after 180 minutes of action. 

Somewhat concerningly for their hopes this season, they also finished the Apertura poorly, losing three of their last four before the break. They finished ninth in the end, two places above today’s opponents 2 de Mayo who also experienced a difficult first half to the year.

They made a big impression in 2024 when they finished fifth in the aggregate table over 44 games as a newly-promoted side, but they have struggled in 2025, picking up just two wins and 18 points from 22 Apertura fixtures. They’ve amassed just one point from two games so far in Clausara, but they did hold champions Libertad to a 0-0 draw with 10 men last time out in a resolute display. 

The reason I fancy this clash for Friday’s Football Bet of the Day is because both teams seem well-matched right now, and the duo also draw an awful lot of games. Club General Caballer drew seven games in the first part of 2025, but five of those came in just 11 home fixtures. 

Meanwhile, 2 de Mayo won just two of their 22 matches, but remarkably drew another 12 - over half their fixtures ending all square. That is an astonishing statistic as they just don’t seem to be able to convert those draws into all-important wins. 

These two drew 1-1 in gameweek 20 of the Apertura, and with Club General low on confidence, I think backing the spoils to be shared again in this bottom of the table clash is a sensible selection for Friday’s Football Bet of the Day.
