Rangers to beat Panathinaikos
Rangers begin their quest to make it to the Champions League group phase on Tuesday as they host Panthinaikos at Ibrox (19:45, Premier Sports 1). Russell Martin will hope to get his reign off to a winning competitive start, and the former Southampton boss will be keen to win over the Ibrox faithful after a mixed reaction to his appointment this summer.
There was a 2-2 draw with Club Brugge in pre-season which was notable, but this is a new-look squad, with new owners and now a new manager at the helm. Rangers will have to tighten up at the back having kept one clean sheet in their last 13, and Martin’s possession-heavy style of football should help them to achieve that.
Panathinaikos will provide a tough test having finished second after the Championship round in Greece to make it to this stage. They were a whopping 16 points adrift of champions Olympiakos however, and I think Rangers will be able to get the better of them under the new regime.
Viktoria Plzen to beat Servette
Viktoria Plzen finished second in the Czech First League last season, as Slavia Praha stormed to the title with 90 points. They did have a decent run in the Europa League however, making it through the qualifiers and the group phase, all the way to the last 16 where they were narrowly beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Italian giants Lazio.
They will be targeting another decent run in Europe and should be able to beat Swiss side Servette on home soil. The visitors finished second behind FC Basel after the play-off round but lost to Braga in Europa League qualifying and then they were defeated by eventual champions Chelsea in the play-off round of the Conference League. I’ll side with the home side for this first leg.

England to beat Italy
After an absolutely insane quarter-final against Sweden, England have somehow made it to the final four of the European Championship. It looked like they were down and out, two goals down with 15 minutes to play in the quarter-final, but they fought back to force extra time and penalties.
In one of the craziest penalty shootouts we’ve seen, the Lionesses were once again on the brink of elimination, but Swedish goalkeeper Jennifer Falk blazed her penalty over the bar. England finally got through and now face Italy, who beat Norway in the final minute thanks to star striker Cristiana Girelli.
Despite that win, England should be able to beat Italy relatively comfortably. Italy are ranked 14th in the world, while the defending champions are fifth, but it is England’s quality and tournament experience that should carry them through. I’m confident that the Lionesses will be playing in another Euros final this weekend.
Slovan Bratislava to beat Zrinjski Mostar
Let’s round this one off with another Champions League qualifier. Slovan Bratislava are the dominant force of Slovakian football and they made it all the way to the play-off round of qualifying last season, before narrowly losing to Midtjylland. They will fancy their chances of making it to the group phase this season as they face Zrinjski Mostar, the champions of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
They won the league by one point last term but there is a massive disparity between these two divisions and that should play out on the pitch. Home win.
