Middlesbrough to beat Doncaster Rovers
Middlesbrough got off to a winning start under Rob Edwards, as Boro secured a 1-0 win over Swansea at the weekend. It wasn’t a pretty game by any stretch of the imagination, but a Dael Fry header was enough to secure them all three points.
They will need to produce better in front of goal moving forward, as they only created an xG of 0.35 in a dour game, but the defence looked solid enough as they kept Swansea at arm’s length. They host a Doncaster outfit that has started the League 1 season well with two wins out of two, but on paper the home side should have too much for them - especially given fringe players are fighting to prove themselves under the new boss. Home win.
Stockport County to beat Crewe Alexandra
Another home win is expected at Edgeley Park. These two teams have also won two games out of two in the league, with Stockport beating both Wycombe Wanderers and Bolton Wanderers in League 1 already. Dave Challinor’s men look extremely strong this season and should be challenging for a place in the Championship once the spring months roll around.
Crewe have started brightly under Lee Bell but they are a division below and I think their positive start to the season will slowly fade away given their lack of squad depth. As a result, I’m going to back them to fall to a defeat at Stockport, who will be wanting to keep winning for as long as possible. I’m a massive fan of the Hatters and the work they’ve done over the past few years, and they could well be in the second tier this time next year. They should be too strong for Crewe.

Portsmouth to beat Reading
Pompey got off to a winning start in the Championship as John Mousinho guided his side to a 1-0 success at Oxford United, and there’s an underlying feeling that they could go well this season. Of the 18 Championship teams that played at this level last term, Mousinho is the only manager starting this season at the same club, and that level of continuity should help Portsmouth progress.
They’ve got a really strong squad with new arivial Adrian Segecic scoring on his competitive debut, while Josh Murphy is also a star at this level. They should have too much on home soil for a Reading side who have had a dreadful start to the new season, losing two out of two without scoring a single goal. It should be comfortable at Fratton Park for the hosts.
Wrexham to beat Hull City
An all-Championship clash takes place at the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday night and although the two teams are in the same league, I will edge for a Wrexham win. I watched the entirety of Hull’s 0-0 draw with Coventry on Saturday (lucky me), and although I was impressed with Sergej Jakirovic’s side from a defensive standpoint, I do think they lacked a little going forward.
Charlie Hughes is a wonderful defender and Semi Ajayi is a great addition, although we can expect the manager to rotate here. I just think there will be a strong narrative at play here. Wrexham tasted a bruising late defeat at Southampton but will want to make an impression in front of their own fans. I can also see them going deep into this competition and getting drawn against one of the big boys - just for the Disney documentary more than anything.
I could be completely wrong, but I’ll side with Phil Parkinson’s outfit on this occasion.
