Welcome to the 3-3-3 betting column. Why is it called that? Glad you asked.  It’s not a formation to play when you’ve had a man sent off but rather:

3- The number of different selections making up the acca.

3- The number of different (non-English) European Leagues the selections are taken from every week.

3- The minimum odds (3/1) or 4.0 if you prefer, that the acca will come to it every week.

And it really is as simple as that. The selections can be from any betting markets, as long as they meet the criteria set out above.  And to round things off, every week I’ll leave you with a cool (or at least I think so) bit of trivia involving one of the teams featured in the acca. Simples...

2025-26 season Current P and L: -3

2024-25 season’s P and L: +16.9

Two out of three for the third week in a row last time out with Napoli letting us down this time. They made a bit of a meal of what should have been a relatively straightforward fixture at home to Cagliari, winning it 1-0 after scoring deep into second-half extra time. Good for them. but not for us. as we needed the home win with at least two goals in it.  So, three close calls but that’s obviously not good enough. Let’s see if we can crack it this week.

  • Auxerre vs Monaco
  • Saturday September 13 20:05
  • Selection: Monaco to win @ 4/7

Monaco had a pretty good season last time out, finishing third. The number of points they finished behind PSG (23 for the record) is almost an irrelevance, the more important observation being it was just four off second-placed Marseille.

And they’ve made a decent start to this season too with a 3-1 win over Le Havre and a 3-2 victory over Strasbourg, those scorelines suggesting they’re not going to have much trouble scoring goals this season.

As it happens, they failed to score at Lille in their one away match so far, losing 1-0, but that needs to be put into perspective: Lille are generally excellent at home.

Monaco are away at Auxerre this weekend, who did admittedly win their only home match this season, but lost the other two.

So, I’m not expecting things to be totally straightforward but Monaco have won on their last two visits here- 3-2 and 3-0 - and certainly have the better squad on paper, so I think they’ll get the job done.

  • Saturday September 13 20:30
  • Famalicao vs Sporting Lisbon
  • Selection: Sporting to win and over 1.5 goals @ 4/6

I’m not sure that Rui Borges got quite the credit he deserved when taking over at Sporting last season when Ruben Amorim left for Man Utd and Joao Pereira’s spell as Amorim’s replacement turned into a nightmare.

Borges delivered them the title and followed that up with the Portuguese Super Cup. Despite the loss of star man Viktor Gyokeres, Sporting have started the season well, where bar an under-par performance against Porto at home, losing 2-1, they’ve been pretty good.

And Famalicao shouldn’t present too many problems for them this weekend. Sporting beat them 3-0 at home and 3-1 away last season; 75% of their away matches had at least three goals in them during the last campaign.

A Sporting win looks a pretty safe bet, while I can’t see this ending 1-0, so any sort of 2-0, 2-1, 3-0, 3-1 scoreline would do us just fine.

  • Sunday September 14 11:00
  • Roma vs Torino
  • Selection: Under 2.5 Goals @ 4/5

I’ve said before that betting on ‘unders’ – whether corners, bookings or goals - isn’t the best for the old ticker but good value bets are good value bets and my priority here is to pick winners and try to replicate last year’s considerable profit in this column.

So, this selection does come with a health warning, but I have to include it.

Torino were in ‘safety first, prioritise defence, keep things as tight as possible’ mode for much of last season and their over/under 2.5 goals record certainly reflected that with just 16% of their home matches going overs (three out of 19), while for away matches it went up to 36.6%, which was still the second-lowest strike rate for ‘overs’ in the division.

Curiously, the only side whose away matches last campaign ended with less goals than theirs was Roma (26.3%), who are of course their opponents this weekend.

Now, as it happens the match is in Rome (52% at home last year) but those are still stats to take note of. As are the fact that both of Roma’s matches so far in Serie A this season have been 1-0 wins to them and that one of two of Torino’s stayed ‘unders’. Four of the last six between them have stayed ‘unders’ as did both of the matches last season, ending in 1-0 and 2-0 wins for Roma. ‘Unders’ it is.

James’ Fun Fact

After two spells at each of Juventus and Manchester United, Paul Pogba is now at Monaco having left Juventus after being banned for failing an anti-doping test. But we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see the World Cup winner in action as he’s not yet full fit and hasn’t featured for them this term.
