USA vs Bosnia-Herzegovina Prediction: Back Balogun to find the net again

USA host Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara for their round of 32 tie at the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday (5pm local time/Thursday 1am BST, BBC One). The Stars and Stripes impressed during the group stage while Bosnia scraped their way into the knockout phase.

Mauricio Pochettino might be without the services of Cristian Roldan (muscle), Mark McKenzie (foot) and Auston Trusty (ankle), who will all need to be assessed ahead of the match.

Folarin Balogun has scored twice at the tournament so far and he's expected to come back in to lead the line for the co-hosts. The striker is likely going to be supported by Sergino Dest and Christian Pulisic, who were also on the bench in the last game against Turkey.

Tyler Adams and Malik Tillman will partner each other in midfield as they look to dictate the tempo.

Bosnia's only injury concern is Amar Dedic (thigh). Other than that, Sergej Barbarez has everyone else available, so we can expect a similar lineup to the one that defeated Qatar on matchday three.

Tarik Muharemovic is back available after his suspension and he could be thrown straight back into the defence.

Bosnia are a tough side to break down. It took a red card for Switzerland to start causing the Dragons real problems, with three of the Swiss' four goals coming after Muharemovic's dismissal.

USA have looked lively going forward, which is what to expect with Pochettino in charge. The Stars and Stripes have a lot of good attacking players who can cause a lot of trouble for Bosnia's back line.

I think they're worth backing to score three goals in Santa Clara inside 90 minutes because they've managed this feat in three of their past eight outings. It may take some time for them to find gaps in Bosnia's defence but once they do, I reckon the floodgates will open.

Balogun's two goals at the World Cup have followed a bright campaign for Monaco in Ligue 1. The centre-forward scored 13 times in 30 league appearances in 2025/26, and he is being tipped for a big summer transfer.

His focus remains on the World Cup, though, and he'll be hoping that his golden touch in front of goal will continue on Wednesday. Balogun's movement allows him to get into good areas and with service provided by the likes of Pulisic and Dest, he's worth backing to add to his tally.
