Spain:

After a decidedly dodgy start to their World Cup campaign, drawing 0-0 with lowly Cape Verde, La Roja kicked in to gear with back-to-back wins over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to comfortably top Group H. Not only that but the stalemate against the African side now doesn't look too bad considering their qualification and Luis de la Fuente's side are yet to concede a goal thus far.

The current European Champions are in the middle of a 34 match unbeaten run (barring penalties) and it will be a tough ask to stop them from progressing deep into this competition.

The defensive efforts will be particularly pleasing for de la Fuente, given his current injury issues on the attacking front. Yeremy Pino (shoulder), Nico Williams (adductor) and Victor Munoz (thigh) are all major injury doubts for the last 32 game and it appears there will be no significant rotation for the Austria game. The only decision really is in midfield where Mikel Merino faces being displaced by Dani Olmo, Gavi or Fabian Ruiz.

Austria:

Austria qualified after one of the most entertaining and dramatic of all the 72 group games, as Sasa Kalajdzic scored a 96th minute header to make the game versus Algeria 3-3 and taking Das Team into second spot behind Argentina. Had he not the Austrians would have been saying 'auf wiedersehen' to the World Cup after missing out on goal difference.

Ralf Rangnick's side  had earlier looked too good for Jordan in their opener, defeating them 3-1, before losing 2-0 to an impressive looking Argentina outfit in Dallas. Now they face what looks an insurmountable task against the Spaniards, but Rangnick looks to have a full complement to choose from, with no known injury issues.

Kalajjdzic's moment of magic looks unlikely to force his way into the starting Xi however.

Spain vs Austria Key Players:

Lamine Yamal (Spain)

It was widely expected that young Lamine Yamal would be one of the main contenders for both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards but thus far he has been outshone by the other star names such as Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland.

Still just 18 and the current runner up of the Ballon d'Or, the Barcelona wonderkind has constantly broken records since bursting on to the scene when winning the European Championships with Spain at just 16.

Entering the tournament partially injured, Yamal had to enter from the bench in the opening game against Cape Verde but started and opened the scoring against the Saudis. One gets the feeling he is just warming into the tournament at the right time.

Konrad Laimer (Austria)

The Bayern Munich star has had a great season in the Bundesliga as an inverted right-back and carries a huge amount of responsibility as one of Austria's main players.

The 28-year-old does the basics well and will likely be up against the likes of Cucurella and Pedri in Los Angeles. He will have to do a huge amount of work if the Austrians are able to get past Spain.
