South Africa World Cup 2026: Bafana Bafana need Foster to catch fire

South Africa haven't been to a FIFA World Cup since they hosted the tournament in 2010, but a strong qualification campaign, where they beat Nigeria to top spot in their group, has seen Bafana Bafana qualify for the 2026 finals in North America.
Below are my South Africa World Cup 2026 predictions, including an assessment of their squad and chances of progressing from Group A, where they take on Mexico, South Korea and the Czech Republic.
South Africa World Cup 2026 Odds
Goalkeepers: Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns), Ricardo Goss (Siwelele), Sipho Chaine (Orlando Pirates).
Defenders: Khuliso Mudau, Aubrey Modiba, Khulumani Ndamane (all Mamelodi Sundowns), Olwethu Makhanya (Philadelphia Union), Bradley Cross (Kaizer Chiefs), Thabang Matuludi (Polokwane City), Nkosinathi Sibisi, Kamogelo Sebelebele (both Orlando Pirates), Ime Okon (Hannover), Samukele Kabini (Molde FK), Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Chicago Fire).
Midfielders: Teboho Mokoena, Jayden Adams (both Mamelodi Sundowns), Thalente Mbatha (Orlando Pirates), Sphephelo Sithole (Tondela).
Forwards: Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi, Evidence Makgopa, Relebohile Mofokeng (all Orlando Pirates), Lyle Foster (Burnley), Iqraam Rayners, Themba Zwane (both Mamelodi Sundowns), Thapelo Maseko (AEL Limassol).
Lyle Foster is probably the most well-known player in the South Africa squad, especially to a UK audience, as has spent the last few seasons at Burnley.
The majority play club football in their homeland, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates well represented in the squad.
South Africa scored just 15 goals in 10 qualifiers, the joint-fewest of any African nation to reach this year's World Cup finals, so it's clear to see where they are likely to struggle in North America.
Certainly, a lot of pressure will be put on the shoulders of Foster, who head coach Hugo Broos admits is lacking confidence following a missed penalty in last Friday's goalless draw with Nicaragua.

Group A Fixtures:
11 June 1pm local (8pm BST) - vs Mexico (Mexico City)
18 June 12pm local (5pm BST) - vs Czech Republic (Atlanta)
24 June 7pm local (25 June 2am BST) - vs South Korea (Monterrey)
Player to watch: Lyle Foster
Three goals in 26 Premier League appearances in 2025/26 is hardly inspiring stuff from South Africa's main man, who struggled to even get a game following Scott Parker's departure, playing just one of the Clarets' last four as they fell to relegation.
Still, Foster picked up two goals and two assists at this year's AFCON, so he's shown that he can step up for his country before, and he'll need to at the World Cup with limited support.
Prediction: Bottom of Group A
Mexico have the weight of a country behind them, while South Korea and the Czech Republic both have more individual talent than South Africa.
I'm struggling to see where a win comes from, so unfortunately, they're my pick to finish bottom of Group A.
