Ecuador World Cup 2026: Can rock-solid defence take them far?

Ecuador seriously impressed during qualifying, and I’ll open up this Ecuador World Cup 2026 preview by stating that they are my dark horses in North America.
That means, given my record, that they are sure to be heading home at the first opportunity, but with hope in our hearts, let’s take a lot at their squad and their hopes for the summer.
Ecuador World Cup 2026 Odds
Goalkeepers: Hernan Galindez (Huracan), Moises Ramirez (Kifisia), Gonzalo Valle (LDU Quito).
Defenders: Piero Hincapie (Arsenal), Willian Pacho (Paris St-Germain), Pervis Estupinan (AC Milan), Felix Torres (Internacional), Joel Ordonez (Club Brugge), Jackson Porozo (Tijuana), Angelo Preciado (Atletico Mineiro), Yaimar Medina (Genk)
Midfielders: Moises Caicedo (Chelsea), Alan Franco (Atletico Mineiro), Kendry Paez (Chelsea), Pedro Vite (UNAM), Jordy Alcivar (Independiente del Valle), Denil Castillo (Midtjylland), Gonzalo Plata (Flamengo), John Yeboah (Venezia), Nilson Angulo (Sunderland), Alan Minda (Atletico Mineiro)
Forwards: Enner Valencia (Pachuca), Kevin Rodriguez (Union Saint-Gilloise), Jordy Caicedo (Huracan), Anthony Valencia (Antwerp), Jeremy Arevalo (Stuttgart).
Let’s first take a look at this squad that Sebastian Beccacece has chosen for this World Cup campaign. Enner Valencia is the 36-year-old captain, and with 49 goals is the top goalscorer in history for his country.
Kendry Paez is a young starlet in midfield, while his club teammate Moises Caicedo is the star name in midfield. The midfield and attack are not the stars of the show in this squad however, with a star-studded defence carrying them to this tournament.
Ecuador conceded just five, yes five, goals in 18 qualification games against South American opposition. It’s a remarkable record, with Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie, PSG’s Willian Pacho, Pervis Estupinan of AC Milan, and Joel Ordonez (Club Brugge), making up a fearsome back four.
I look at that back line and the way that Ecuador set up, and feel that they are just nightmare opponents for any of the big guns, especially in the knockout stages. Just two defeats out of 18 against the likes of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay mean they have the credentials to go deep into this competition.
Group E pairs them with Germany, Ivory Coast and Curacao, and I’d expect them to extremely competitive in all three fixtures. Curacao are the minnows here, and Ecuador should be far too strong for them, so they have a decent shot at progressing.

Caicedo is going to have to play a big role in this Ecuador midfield, as he did during qualifying. The defence takes all the headlines but it is a team effort to keep so many clean sheets, and Caicedo is one of the top midfielders in the world.
His transfer fee of £115m to Chelsea still feels far too high, especially given their struggles recently, but his quality is obvious for all to see. Coming towards his prime at 24, he’s already got 60 appearances and is likely going to start every game in North America if available.
Ecuador are going to rely on him going both ways this summer.
Prediction: Last 16
I told you I was going big on my dark horses. Ecuador should finish second in this group, but don’t rule out them stunning Germany to top spot. I’ve worked out their path in the knockouts based on a second-place finish as they do lack a goalscoring edge up top.
I’ve got them meeting Erling Haaland’s Norway in the last 32 in an attack vs defence clash, but I’d back defence to come out on top in a knockout game. In the last 16, they would likely play Brazil and although they would be underdogs again, they drew 0-0 and lost 1-0 to them in qualifying. I just think they can be stubborn and could go far, but this route makes it tough to back them.
They could be the surprise package of the entire tournament, especially if they win the group. As it stands I’ll back them to go out in the last 16.
