Manchester United end a week of upheaval by welcoming Brighton and Hove Albion to Old Trafford on Sunday, January 11 (16:30, TNT Sports). This FA Cup third round tie is a rematch of the 1983 final, which saw United win a replay 4-0 after a 2-2 draw in the initial game.

Team News

United caretaker boss Darren Fletcher can call upon Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount again having tested their legs in the 2-2 draw at Burnley. Fernandes made it through 61 minutes before being replaced by Mount. The midfield pair are reported to be showing no ill effects and should feature again.

Another Red who might be given an opportunity is Shea Lacey. The 18-year-old winger almost won the game at Turf Moor, rattling the bar and narrowly shooting wide with two precocious efforts. Fletcher knows Lacey well from the youth setup and is likely to let him shine again here.

FA Cup Odds

Three men who will not feature at Old Trafford are Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui. That trio are still representing their countries at the Africa Cup of Nations. But Matthijs De Light is understood to be closing in on a return, having missed eight matches with a back injury.

Brighton have their own Afcon absentee, with midfielder Carlos Baleba a teammate of Mbeumo with Cameroon.

Manager Fabian Hurzeler is also without long-term absentees Stefanos Tzimas (ACL), Adam Webster (knee) and Solly March (knee). Mats Wieffer is also unlikely to appear as he deals with a toe issue.

Today's Football Fixtures

Manchester United vs Brighton Odds

The Red Devils are priced at 9/10 to pick up a win in this season’s FA Cup opener. Brighton are backed at 11/4 while the draw is also priced at 11/4.

United pair Mateus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko top the first goalscorer market, each at 9/2. With a man who contributed to plenty of comebacks as a player now managing the side, Fletcher’s men are 13/2 to win from behind.

Manchester United vs Brighton Stats

  • Bruno Fernandes is third on the list of Premier League goal involvements this season with 13 (five goals, eight assists). The Portugal player has played less games than anyone in the top 10 apart from 10th-placed Hugo Ekitike.
  • Brighton’s James Milner is the oldest player to appear in the Premier League this season at 40 years and three days at press time. Seagulls striker Danny Welbeck is ninth on the list of veterans at 35 years, 1 month and 12 days. United’s oldest is the comparatively cherubic Casemiro, who is 22nd on the list at 33 years, 10 months and 15 days.

Brighton to win and BTTS @ 9/2

Brighton have been patchy mid-table fodder this season, with the upwardly mobile, Europe-chasers of recent years flattering to deceive at times. A winless December ruined Christmas for many Seagulls supporters and started to cause some real concern on the South Coast.

Business has picked up in 2026, though. Goals from Georginio Rutter and Yasin Ayari saw off Burnley in their January opener. Then a creditable 1-1 draw at the Etihad against Manchester City was a step in the right direction.

Momentum is not something United have, as they stumble into the game with a caretaker manager in charge and the cracks Ruben Amorim left unattended threatening to chasm. The 2-2 at Burnley had plenty to recommend it, particularly Sesko’s brace and Lacey’s cameo. But there remains little evidence of anyone finding the correct way to deploy this talented squad.

Fletcher will find some answers, but not all of them, on Sunday afternoon. I think his side will find the net, but fail to make it stick. In 15 games where they have taken the lead, they have won just eight of them. A similar scenario would not surprise me here.

Half Time/Full Time - Draw/Brighton @ 8/1

Neither of these teams could be described as ‘in-form’, so I can see the opening half being either tentative or, more likely, messy. United take leads they can’t keep. Brighton have scored first 10 times and won seven games, drawing two and losing one.

Either way, it feels like Brighton are best-equipped for this task. They will take confidence from doing a professional job on a Burnley team United could not control. Having left Manchester with a result in their last league game, the Seagulls will be in confident, if not infallible, mood.
