Freiburg vs Aston Villa Prediction: History beckons for UEL expert Emery

Freiburg face Aston Villa in the final of the 2026 Europa League (20:00 BST, TNT Sports 1) at Tupras Stadium in Istanbul, home of Besiktas. The 1982 European Champions have the right manager for such an occasion. No head coach has won more than Unai Emery’s four Europa League titles.
Read on for my Freiburg vs Aston Villa predictions ahead of this continental showpiece.

Team News
Villa are sweating over the fitness of midfielder Amadou Onana. The Belgium international could be deputised by Victor Lindelof. The Sweden centre back has done an admirable job in a more advanced role for the Villans and may be asked to continue his work as a utility man in Istanbul.
Ross Barkley is ineligible by virtue of not being in Villa’s UEL squad. Boubacar Kamara is a long-term miss with a knee injury.
There are question marks over Freiburg midfielder Patrick Osterhage, who is a doubt. Head coach Julian Schuster will definitely have to cope without Japan international winger Yuito Suzuki, who has a fractured collarbone.
Freiburg vs Aston Villa Predicted Lineups
- Freiburg: Atubolu; Kubler, Ginter, Lienhart, Treu; Eggestein, Hofler; Beste, Manzambi, Grifo; Matanovic
- Aston Villa: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Lindelof, Tielemans; McGinn, Rogers, Buendia; Watkins
Freiburg are 4/1 to secure the victory while Villa are favourites at 4/6. A draw in 90 minutes is marketed at 11/4.
England striker Ollie Watkins is priced at 7/2 to score first or 5/4 to do so at any time. Emi Buendia is 16/5 to register an assist, something the midfielder has managed five times in this year’s competition.
Freiburg vs Aston Villa Stats
- Villa are the competition’s top scorers this season, bagging 28 goals across their 14 matches
- Freiburg have attempted the third-most clearances in the UEL this term, with 275
Aston Villa to win and both teams to score @ 5/2
Villa know where the goal is in this competition, bagging more than any other team with their 28 goals. 4-0 wins over Nottingham Forest and Bologna in knockout legs shows that their high output is not a case of league stage flat-track bullying.
But Freiburg are no slouches either. They have scored in all but three of their UEL outings this term, including hammering Genk 5-1 and sticking three each past Nice, Braga and twice against Celta Vigo.
I expect Villa to go on the front foot and not give Freiburg much room to breath. But the Bundesliga side are a comfortable counter-attacking outfit and I reckon they’ll be able to poke holes. Villa are too strong overall, but Freiburg will get on the scoresheet.

John McGinn to score anytime @ 16/5
Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Level with centre forward Watkins on five tournament goals, McGinn is my pick to write his name in the history books in Istanbul.
Finals are often settled by something beyond the obvious. It was not the relentless prolificism of Erling Haaland that won the FA Cup last weekend, it was a moment of bliss from Antoine Semenyo.
Do I think John McGinn is going to score a backheel? Perhaps not. But I do think Villa’s longest-serving current player can summon a moment of magic to bag his side the second European trophy in their illustrious history. The midfielder has 10 goals in 42 games this season and he bagged in the round of 16 before scoring a brace in the semis. Cometh the man.
