Euro 2024 Team Betting Predictions: France

The joint-favourites to win Euro 2024, and arguably the strongest squad on paper, belongs to France. Didier Deschamps has proven himself to be an astute manager for several international tournaments, and his nation have now been in three of their last four finals across two World Cups and two European Championships. 

They came within a penalty shootout of retaining the World Cup in Qatar, and now they are heading to Germany as strong as ever. They’ve also got the favourite for the Golden Boot, and Real Madrid’s newest superstar, Kylian Mbappe, at their disposal. 

An Mbappe hat-trick in a World Cup final almost saw them complete an epic comeback against Argentina in Qatar, but it wasn’t to be as Lionel Messi walked away from that final as a world champion. But France have proven over the last eight years that they are anything but a flash in the pan, and their young talent continues to evolve their team. 

Deschamps' main dilemma comes as he must choose which pairing to start in central defence. William Saliba is in contention along with Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano, as France look to move on from solid servant Raphael Varane. Hugo Lloris has also now retired, so Mike Maignan will likely start in goal for the opener. 

Up front, it is more of the same as Olivier Giroud continues to compliment Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele, among others.

Defenders:  Ibrahima Konate, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, Benjamin Pavard, Ferland Mendy, Theo Hernandez, Jules Kounde and Jonathan Clauss.

Midfielders: Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelin Tchouameni, N’Golo Kante, Adrien Rabiot, Youssouf Fofana, Ousmane Dembele and Warren-Zaire Emery.

Attackers: Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, Randal Kolo Muani, Marcus Thuram, Bradley Barcola and Kingsley Coman. 

France to win Euro 2024 @ 4/1

Let’s be honest, France have a real chance of going all the way for the first time in this competition since 2000. They were expected to win on home soil in 2016 but flopped in the final, while three years ago Switzerland stunned them on penalties. Their World Cup performances have been exemplary however, and they possess a wonderful blend of players, and depth in every area. 

The best player in the world is Mbappe, and he tends to turn up in big games, but there is a slight question mark over their goalkeeper, and how solid the new central defensive partnership will be. I’d much rather be backing France than England at this point in time however, and if they both win their groups and progress, they will meet in the semi-final. France can certainly win this tournament. 

France to win Group D @ 8/15 

Short odds, but an incredibly high probability in my eyes. France have been placed in a group with the Netherlands, Austria and Poland and while the Netherlands are a big name, they have underperformed of late, and lack the firepower needed to challenge. Austria are a solid outfit but David Alaba has been ruled out with injury and Poland have very little chance of taking top spot. 

This should be as straightforward as it gets, and I’m not expecting the 2022 World Cup finalists to slip up. They may not even concede a goal. 

France to get nine points in group stage @ 9/4

This is where the value lies in backing France in my eyes, at least for the first part of the tournament. They face Austria up first, and they should be able to dismantle a hard-working side set up by Ralf Rangnick. 

Then they face the Netherlands, a team who have a strong defence, but not one that is likely to be able to contain Mbappe and Co. Finally, Poland should be swept aside, even if Deschamps rings the changes in the final match. I like the order of these fixtures, with the simplest match coming last, so there is no reason why France can’t pick up maximum points in Group D. 

Top team goalscorer - Kylian Mbappe @ 8/15

Another short price, but who else can you back? Mbappe has the most shots out of anybody in this French team and although Giroud and Griezmann get plenty of goals, Mbappe has scored for his country at a rate of 0.6 goals per game, ever since he made his debut. 

He is now just four goals behind Thierry Henry, and 10 behind France’s all-time top goalscorer, Giroud. With the big number nine calling it a day after this tournament, it won’t be long until Mbappe stands alone as number one. He should have another cracking tournament.
