Estoril vs Estrela Prediction: Home win expected in Portugal

We’ve got a game from the top flight of the Primeira Liga coming our way on Monday as Estoril host Estrela (18:45) in a Lisbon derby. The Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota plays host to the penultimate fixture of the opening gameweek.

Injured duo Xeka and Jandro Orellana are facing late tests in order to be fit for this one, while they are also potentially going to be without Alejandro Marques. He is being linked with a move away having scored 11 goals last term, more than any other player in the Estoril squad last term. 

Yanis Begraoui will likely be trusted to get the goals in his absence, having hit three goals for the Canaries in this fixture last season - a game that ended 4-0. 

Estrela don’t have any injury concerns, meaning Jose Augusto Faria has a fresh squad to choose from. Alan Godoy has been strong in pre-season having scored four goals in pre-season, and he is likely to provide the biggest threat for the visitors.

I’m going to back the home side to come out on top here, given what we saw unfold between these two back in May. Estoril ran out 4-0 winners and there was a large gap in quality between the two teams. I know there’s some concern lingering about the quality of the pre-season the home side have been through, but honestly, I’m not bothered about non-competitive football matches. 

Ian Cathro’s team have lost four of their last five outings in pre-season, with the 39-year-old Scotsman hoping to put a tricky summer behind him. They finished eighth last term however, while Estrela only just avoided the relegation play-off with a 15th-place finish. Estoril won the head-to-head meetings 8-2 on aggregate, so I’m going to go against the grain in terms of pre-season form, and back the home side to win with a -1 handicap.

I think we should plump for a 2-0 home win based on the dominance they have shown against this particular opposition. I will back them, as I have said, to put a testing pre-season behind them and get the job done, while their most likely goalscorer is surely Begraoui.

He scored a hat-trick last time these two met, and got 11 goals in 34 in Portugal’s top flight last term. He’s got enough quality to open the scoring once again - so let’s back him to do just that on the opening day.
