It could be do or die for Ghana's Africa Cup of Nations qualification hopes in Abidjan on Thursday evening, as the Black Stars face Egypt at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny (KO, 20:00).

Chris Hughton's side arrived into Ivory Coast with a lot to prove after group stage exits at the 2021 AFCON and 2022 World Cup, both of which came before his time as head coach, but the former Brighton manager did oversee a run of just one win in five prior to the tournament.

The West African nation got off to the worst possible start last Sunday as Cape Verde beat them for the first time in their history, and the pressure is now on to get a positive result against Egypt to keep their AFCON dream alive.

The Pharaohs aren't in the best shape either after only narrowly avoiding defeat to Mozambique courtesy of a 97th minute Mohamed Salah equaliser, but Rio Vitoria's outfit know a victory on Thursday would ensure they finish above their opponents, and likely book their place in the round of 16.

Team News

Egypt elected to start ex-Aston Villa winger Trezeguet on the left-hand side of a three-pronged attack including Mohamed Salah and Mostafa Mohamed against Mozambique, but their goalscorers against the Mambas could be joined by Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush for this encounter.

West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus was a big miss in Ghana's opening round defeat, so the Black Stars will be desperate for him to recover from injury. According to Hughton, the 23-year-old has been in training but requires further assessment before getting the all-clear for Thursday.

Hughton must also decide whether the likes of Inaki Williams and Ernest Nuamah are worthy of being promoted from their roles as substitutes last week.

Match Odds

Egypt arrive into this one as 19/20 favourites to pick up their first victory of this year's AFCON, with the draw at 15/8 and a win for Ghana priced at 3/1.

Both teams to score is 5/4 and it's 13/8 for over 2.5 goals.

Traditionally, Egypt's strength has been in their resolute backline, but perhaps attack is the best form of defence for them in Ivory Coast.

The Pharaohs shipped two within the space of four minutes against Mozambique and Ghana should take confidence from that, with the Black Stars likely needing to score once considering their defensive issues which have seen them keep just two clean sheets in their last eight games - against Namibia and Madagascar.

With Antoine Semenyo, Joseph Pantsil and potentially Kudus in their ranks, Ghana should trouble the Egypt defence, but ultimately Salah and co should have too much for a nation seemingly in a footballing crisis.

The Bournemouth forward got the nod to start up top ahead of Athletic Club's Williams in Ghana's opening game, and the 24-year-old was a lively presence in attack.

He didn't get a goal to show for his endeavours, but given Williams' struggles in a Black Stars shirt since swapping allegiances from Spain, Semenyo should get another chance to prove his credentials against the Egyptians.

The nature of Mozambique's second goal on Sunday will also pique Semenyo's interest, with his presence enough to settle any backline.
