Dundee vs Hibs Prediction: Hibs hangover after European exit?

Dundee and Hibs will begin their 2025/26 Scottish Premiership campaigns on Sunday afternoon at Dens Park (15:00). The hosts snuck away from relegation last term and Tony Docherty was dismissed, with Steven Pressley now at the helm. 

He will hope for a successful spell in charge, and below you can find my Dundee vs Hibs predictions. 

Team News

Pressley will want to get the best out of Simon Murray this season, after he bagged 16 goals in the Premiership to keep them up. Of course, we have already seen how Dundee could line up in the Scottish League Cup, and Murray scored twice in a 5-0 win over Montrose last time out. 

Pressley will want to carry that confidence into the league, with a 3-4-1-2 formation likely to be the preferred set-up. Emile Acquah should start up top with Murray, while Brentford loanee Tony Yogane should provide the attacking thrust from midfield. Defenders Clark Robertson and Luke Graham both scored in the 5-0 win and should keep their places.

Today's Football Fixtures

Hibs were knocked out of Europe in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday as they lost to FC Midtjylland in the 119th minute. Kieron Bowie and Martin Boyle will look to provide the goal-threat in a 3-4-3, having scored 21 league goals between them last season. 

Chris Cadden and Jordan Obita both played the full 120 minutes at wing-back on Thursday but will likely start again, while Junior Hoilett is another left-footed option to start after coming off the bench against Midtjylland.

Dundee vs Hibs Odds

Dundee are priced as the 16/5 outsiders to win this opener, while Hibs are the 9/10 favourites. That gives the away side an implied win probability of 53%, and a draw can be backed at 11/4.

Over 2.5 goals is 4/6, BTTS is 8/13 and Martin Boyle is the favourite to score first at 5/1. 

Double Chance: Dundee or Draw @ 19/20

Hibs are the odds-on favourites for this clash, but I’m willing to oppose them for a number of reasons. First of all, the draining encounter they had with Midtjylland is surely going to have taken something out of their legs. Expecting a team that has gone through 120 minutes to produce their best football just three days later at this stage of the season feels like a big ask - and I’m expecting some changes to be made by David Gray. 

Dundee were knocked out of the League Cup after two early 1-0 defeats, but they’ve since won two games in a row in emphatic fashion, albeit against lower-league opposition. I’m hoping that will have given them confidence to go and get something in front of their own fans, while Hibs were under the cosh under both legs in Europe and may find it tough to get going here.

Murray has been handed the captaincy by Pressley and that's a massive vote of confidence that the number nine should be able to feed off. He bagged 21 goals in 46 fixtures in all competitions last season, and 15 in 33 in the Scottish Premiership so he will hope for a similar return, and that makes him good value to get off the mark in this opener.
