England’s bid to retain their U21 European Championship title begins on Thursday night as they face Czech Republic U21 in Slovakia (20:00, Channel 4). Lee Carsley will be hoping for a successful campaign, but the group could be difficult, with Germany and Slovenia joining the Young Lions and the Czech Republic in Group B.

Below you can find my Czech Republic U21 vs England U21 predictions featuring betting odds and team news.

Czech Republic U21 vs England U21 Betting Tips

  • England U21 -1 @ 11/8
  • Jonathan Rowe to score anytime @ 11/8

Team News

Unsurprisingly, most of the Czech Republic U21 squad plays their football domestically, although there are a few exceptions. The standout striker could be Venezia’s Daniel Fila, who scored two goals in 10 appearances in Italy since his move in early February. That transfer should see him kick on next season, and he will be hoping for a profitable tournament in Slovakia.

Hamburg midfielder Adam Karabec is also one to watch, while Sparta Prague creator Patrik Vydra has plenty of U21 experience and should be a key player in this tournament.

Czech Republic U21 vs England U21 Stats

  • England are the current holders of the U21 Euros
  • England U21 have won one, drawn two and lost one of their last four
  • Czech Republic U21 have failed to win their last three matches

England have a load of talent at their disposal and Carsley will be licking his lips at the prospect of working with them once again. Defenders include Tino Livramento, CJ Egan-Riley, Jarell Quansah and Ronnie Edwards, with Brighton’s James Beadle likely to start in goal.

Jobe Bellingham is included after his move to Borussia Dortmund, alongside the likes of Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney, Elliot Anderson, Archie Gray and Alex Scott while the attack is incredibly exciting. Captain James McAtee will provide the creativity, with Birmingham City’s Jay Stansfield, Marseille winger Jon Rowe, Harvey Elliott, Omari Hutchinson and Ethan Nwaneri all competing for starting spots.

Czech Republic U21 vs England U21 Odds

Czech Republic U21 have been priced up at 5/1 to win this opener, with England U21 available at 1/2. That gives England an implied win probability of 67% heading into this game, with a draw priced up at 16/5.

Over 2.5 goals is 8/13, BTTS is 8/11 and Stansfield is the favourite to open the scoring at 7/2.

England U21 -1 @ 11/8

England U21 should be able to get off to a winning start in this tournament. They’ve proven themselves to an elite youth side and under Carsley, they have a clear playing identity - something that can’t currently be said of the senior team under Thomas Tuchel. They won eight of their 10 matches to top their qualification group, and since then, have tested themselves up against major European nations.

Their last four fixtures have come against Portugal, France, the Netherlands and Spain, and they’ve ended with two draws, one defeat and one victory. That doesn’t seem like a great set of results on paper, but the two draws came at the end of 2024 when Carsley was in charge of the senior team - with Ben Futcher taking the reins, and the 5-3 defeat to France saw England concede five of seven shots on target, and be reduced to 10 men late on.

The recent win over Portugal is a good marker, and there’s no reason why the Young Lions can’t go deep into this competition. Meanwhile the Czech Republic finished second in their group and haven’t won any of their last three outings. A comfortable England win for me.

Jonathan Rowe to score anytime @ 11/8

Now this is a slight punt in truth, but it’s based on a couple of things. First of all, there is no doubting Rowe’s quality, even though he hasn’t been in the best of form for Marseille this season. He’s also not been able to establish himself as a first-choice option for the U21 team - but he has been selected for the squad - and Carsley is a fan.

With Liam Delap not involved in this squad, there is a question mark on who will start as the central striker, with Stansfield also relatively inexperienced at international level. Now, Rowe could well wear the number nine at this tournament, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he starts this first game up top, alongside Nwaneri or Hutchinson. That fluid attack is exciting, but it could do with a focal point, so I’m taking a risk on Rowe to find the net and get his tournament off to a flying start.
