Crystal Palace started last season with Roy Hodgson at the helm but the ex-England manager stepped down from his post on February 19 following a poor run of results and his ill health.

The Eagles were 16th at the time of his departure, just five points clear of the relegation zone and in danger of ending their 11-year stay in the top-flight.

However, Glasner was subsequently appointed as Hodgson's successor, and the former Eintracht Frankfurt head coach oversaw a stunning end to the season.

The 49-year-old beat Burnley 3-0 on his debut, and after a five-match winless run followed, Palace embarked on a seven-game unbeaten streak - winning six - to end the campaign in style.

Their form saw them equal their best-ever Premier League points tally of 49 to clinch 10th spot ahead of rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, while their end-of-season salvo saw them break their record for most goals scored in a top-flight campaign. Palace's total of 49 was swelled significantly by the thrashings of West Ham United (5-2), Manchester United (4-0) and Aston Villa (5-0), all at Selhurst Park.

No one was more key to the club's renaissance than the much-maligned Jean-Philippe Mateta, who had struck just three times in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign prior to Glasner's arrival.

The Frenchman scored in Glasner's first game and never looked back, netting 13 times in as many matches to end the season with 16 Premier League goals, 11 more than his previous best in the competition in 2021/22.

Mateta took that form to the Paris 2024 Olympics, scoring five times for his country including one in the quarter-finals, a brace in the semi-finals, and one in a 5-3 defeat to Spain in the final.

If Mateta can replicate his form from the past six months over a full season, who knows where the Eagles could end up?

However, one man who won't be gracing the Selhurst Park turf this year is Mateta's Olympics teammate Michael Olise, who joined Bayern Munich in a big-money move earlier in the summer.

Mateta's goals ensured he grabbed most of the headlines at the back end of the 2023/24 campaign, but Olise was the spark for the club's revival under Glasner.

The 22-year-old was unavailable for the Austrian's first five games through injury, only returning as a late substitute in a 4-2 defeat to Manchester City on April 6.

Olise started Palace's 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield the following weekend and that was the start of the club's unbeaten run until the end of the season. The French playmaker scored four times and registered three assists under Glasner to end the Premier League campaign on 10 and six respectively, in just 19 outings.

His creativity will be a huge loss, and he could be followed out of the Eagles exit door by centre-backs Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen, who have been heavily linked with moves to Newcastle United and Fulham respectively.

The duo have formed a formidable partnership since both arriving at Selhurst Park in the summer of 2021 and losing both, or even just one, would deal Glasner a huge blow.

Chadi Riad has been brought in from Real Betis after a terrific La Liga season at Real Betis under the tutelage of Manuel Pellegrini, but the 21-year-old Moroccan can't be the club's only reinforcement in that area.

The good news is that both Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton, two members of England's Euro 2024 squad, seem set to stay for the next four months at least, while former Watford winger Ismaila Sarr and Japanese playmaker Daichi Kamada bolster their attacking options.

Cheick Doucoure is also back fit after injury kept him out of action for the first half of the year, and he could form an exciting partnership with Wharton in the middle of midfield, with Jefferson Lerma also an option in that area.

However, further reinforcements are required if the Eagles really want to aspire for a top-half finish, and potentially a push for the European spots.
