Coventry City host Preston North End on Friday night (19:45), looking to put themselves back into the top six after midweek results went against them. Wins for West Bromwich Albion and Hull City have piled the pressure onto the other play-off candidates, while Preston now sit five points adrift of sixth place.

Both teams will be desperate to secure a win ahead of the weekend, and below we’ve put forward a couple of betting selections for you to consider.

Coventry vs Preston Tips

  • Draw and BTTS @ 18/5
  • Ellis Simms to score anytime @ 7/4

Team News

Coventry’s midfield woes continued at Stoke City when Victor Torp was taken off with a calf issue at half-time. He is now going to have a scan on the area, but is almost certain to miss this one. He joins Ben Sheaf and Jamie Allen on the sidelines, leaving Josh Eccles and Liam Kelly, who hasn’t started a match this season, as the only natural midfielders fit. Centre-back Joel Latibeudiere is likely to deputise alongside Eccles here in Mark Robins’ 4-2-3-1 system.

PNE's Brad Potts is going to miss the next four matches according to his manager Ryan Lowe, but wide man Duane Holmes has a chance of returning for Friday’s fixture after his injury. Kian Best is getting closer to a return but will miss this one, while Ched Evans is looking to strengthen his hamstring before being thrown back into first-team action.

Match Odds

Coventry are the heavy favourites to win this game, priced at 7/10 to take all three points. Preston can be backed at 4/1 and a draw is 11/4. If you fancy some goals, BTTS can be backed at 8/11 while over 2.5 goals is 4/5.

Draw and BTTS @ 18/5

Coventry have only lost once on home soil so far this season and the CBS Arena is turning into a fortress. However, despite that stat, they only boast the ninth-best home record, having drawn eight of their 16 home matches so far. The Sky Blues have had a couple of 2-2 draws in their last four league matches and against a team of similar ability, I feel this will be a really close one to call.

Preston also drew their last match 2-2, coming from two goals down against Blackburn Rovers, and they now haven’t lost in their last five outings. Both teams will probably take a draw before a ball is kicked and I don’t think there is much to choose between either side. Coventry’s clean sheet against Stoke was their first in 12 matches, and I think Preston will be able to get on the scoresheet in a hard-fought encounter.

Ellis Simms to score anytime @ 7/4

Haji Wright has been the go-to man for these Coventry selections this season, but there’s been a slight change over the past two matches. The Sky Blues have lacked a goalscoring number nine so far this term, but now summer signing Simms has come to the fore. He has scored two goals in his last two matches, started both games and is surely going to continue his run in the team on Friday night.

Clearly a confidence player, Simms will be ready to find the net again. Against a Preston team that have only kept one clean sheet in their last six games, Cov should be able to find the net. I’m backing Simms to bag and keep up his goalscoring run.
