Team News

As is customary now, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca made wholesale changes for their Uefa Conference League clash in midweek, with only Benoit Badiashile keeping his place from last weekend's 2-1 triumph over Leicester City for the 2-0 win against Bundesliga side Heidenheim. The Frenchman is expected to drop out on Sunday, however, with Malo Gusto back fit and ready to return at right-back, meaning Wesley Fofana will shuffle across to central defence after featuring at full-back in the East Midlands.

The likes of Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson are also set to return to the starting XI after not making the trip to Germany on Thursday.

Pedro Neto could also be back after missing the Blues' last two games, but Reece James has been ruled out of action for the foreseeable.

Football Odds

Aston Villa will assess Amadou Onana ahead of Sunday’s trip to Chelsea after the Belgian midfielder missed Villa's last two matches, but Jacob Ramsey is a confirmed absentee.

The rest of the squad appeared to be good to go, with Ezri Konsa returning to the matchday squad on Wednesday as Villa drew 0-0 with Juventus in the Uefa Champions League. Boss Unai Emery could draft the England international back into his starting XI with either Matty Cash or Diego Carlos dropping out of defence.

Chelsea are 7/10 favourites, giving the Blues an implied win probability of 58.8%, while Aston Villa are 18/5, or a 21.7% chance, to make it back-to-back Premier League victories at Stamford Bridge after claiming a 1-0 success in west London last season.

The draw is priced at 16/5, both teams to score at 8/15, and over 2.5 total goals at 1/2.

Palmer (5/4) heads the anytime goalscorer market while visiting forward Ollie Watkins, who struck the winner in the corresponding fixture last season, is 15/8 to breach the Blues backline.

Half-time Result - Chelsea @ 23/20

Aston Villa have been slow-starters in the Premier League this season, heading into the interval a goal down in 33.3 per cent (four) of their 12 games. The Villans were 2-1 down against Everton on September 14 before coming back to win 3-2 at Villa Park and 1-0 behind at the break against Wolves at the same venue a week later before scoring three second-half goals to triumph 3-2.

Emery's side have also been trailing at the interval in their last two league matches, with Liverpool scoring in each half at Anfield on November 9 to claim a 2-0 victory, while last weekend's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at Villa Park required a 77th-minute equaliser from Ross Barkley to level the scores after the Eagles had taken a 2-1 lead into half-time.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have been ahead at half-time on four occasions this term, including last time out at the King Power Stadium when Jackson fired them into a first-half lead that they never relinquished.

It was Villa who made a fast start in the last meeting between these two teams in April, with a Marc Cucurella own-goal and a Morgan Rogers strike putting the hosts 2-0 ahead at Villa Park, although the visitors recovered in the second half to level the game at 2-2.

However, with Villa low on confidence this season, I think we could see events reversed on Sunday, with the Blues going a goal or two up in the opening 45 minutes.

Booking Points - 60-75 @ 15/8

Both Premier League head-to-heads last season were feisty affairs with 75 booking points awarded in Villa's victory at the Bridge, and 60 dished out in the reverse fixture at Villa Park.

Gusto contributed 25 of the 75 booking points in west London as he was shown a straight red in September 2023, with the other 50 points accrued by five yellow cards - two for Chelsea and three for Villa.

The 2-2 draw at Villa Park, meanwhile, saw the booking points evenly split as both teams received three yellows, earning them 30 booking points each.

Chelsea have been in the wars again this season and heading into the weekend they lead the Premier League yellow card count with 45, while Villa are in eighth on 30. The Villans have also received one red card, so their 2024/25 booking points total comes to 325, which averages out at 27.1 per game, while Chelsea's average is 37.5 per game (450 booking points). Combine those two totals and you get 64.6 booking points per game, which sits nicely in the 60-75 region required for the above selection to land.

Of course, it's not as easy as adding up each team's 'for' total, but it's a good indication that both are pretty physical in duels and are no strangers to cards, like we have seen in recent league meetings between the sides, so at 15/8, I think 60-75 booking points is worth taking on this weekend.
