Team News

After narrowly missing out on a play-off berth last season, Boro have been active in the transfer market to bolster their squad, with Aidan Morris, Delano Burgzorg, and Luke Ayling walking through the door at the Riverside.

Perhaps more crucially, Michael Carrick hasn't had any notable departures to deal with, which bodes well for his side's chances of returning to England's top flight.

The goalscoring hopes will once again fall on the shoulders of Emmanuel Latte Lath, who managed to net 11 in his final 12 appearances of the 2023/24 campaign, and he'll lead the line on Saturday. Ayling will start in the back four after his impressive loan spell last term, while Hayden Hackney is fit again after missing the last few months of the season.

As for Swansea, they're looking for a much-improved campaign this season after finishing 14th last year, and this will be Luke Williams' first full season in charge of the Welsh outfit, after being appointed as manager back in January.

Their transfer policy has mainly focused on securing young talent, which has seen the likes of Lawrence Vigouroux join from Burnley, along with midfielder Goncalo Franco from Moreirense, while forwards Eom Ji-sung and Zan Vipotnik have arrived from Gwangju and Bordeaux respectively.

Williams may hand debuts to his new signings at the weekend, and Azeem Abdulai has impressed for the Swans during pre-season, which could see him start in the engine room at the Riverside.

Boro are favourites for the game at 5/6, which gives them a theoretical chance of 54.5% of securing all three points in the opening game. The draw can be backed at 11/4, while a Swansea win is currently priced at 16/5.

Four of Middlesbrough's last five Championship matches have gone over 2.5 goals, and that is reflected in the price at 8/11, and it's 7/4 for over 3.5, which has occurred in Boro's last three Championship outings.

Middlesbrough to win and both teams to score - yes @ 12/5

Middlesbrough will be feeling confident heading into the new campaign as they have a very good record against their Welsh opponents. The Riversiders have won the last four meetings between the pair and are unbeaten in their last six.

In addition, Boro won 2-0 when these sides met at the Riverside in April and I'm confident they can claim the spoils again.

However, Swansea were decent travellers last season, scoring 33 goals in 23 away games so they can find a way through here - there were also goals at both ends in each of Middlesbrough’s final five games last season.

Boro and btts at 12-5

Emmanuel Latte Lath to score anytime @ 8/5

Latte Lath is expected to make an impact here, as the Ivorian averaged 1.4 shots on target per game last season and scored a brace in this fixture back in April.

The 25-year-old was Boro's top bagsman with 16 strikes in the league, and he'll be key to their promotion chances this year. He finished last season strongly, and will be looking to hit the ground running from the get-go.

The Ivorian has also been firing in pre-season, netting against Bolton and Doncaster, and he can pick up where he left off with an anytime effort on Saturday.

Latte lath to score anytime at 8-5
