Middlesbrough vs Sheff Utd Prediction: Boro can land a statement win

Middlesbrough welcome Sheffield United to the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday night (20:00, Sky Sports Main Event), looking to bounce back from their 2-0 home defeat to Bristol City on Saturday. Michael Carrick's side have been playing well of late but haven't been getting the results to show for it.
The Blades were handed their first defeat of the season on Friday as they were beaten 2-0 by promotion rivals Leeds United. They now travel to face another side hoping to return to the Premier League this season, so it could be another tough affair. Read on for my Middlesbrough vs Sheff Utd prediction, accompanied by match odds and team news.
Middlesbrough vs Sheff Utd Odds
Middlesbrough are 21/20 to win this encounter, which gives them a theoretical chance of 48.8%. Sheff Utd are priced at 13/5 to take the three points, giving them an implied probability of 27.8%. The draw is marketed at 5/2 (28.6%).
Both teams to score is available at 8/11 and over 2.5 goals can be backed at 10/11.
Sheff Utd midfielder Gustavo Hamer has four goals to his name in the Championship this season and he is 7/2 to score anytime at the Riverside.
Middlesbrough attacker Tommy Conway has scored twice this term, and he is 15/8 to find the back of the net at any stage during this contest.
Team News
Boro are missing several players due to injury at the moment. Carrick will be unable to call upon the services of Lukas Engel, Darragh Lenihan and Tommy Smith on Wednesday night.
Jonny Howson and Dael Fry are also unlikely to feature but both are nearing returns to action from their own respective injuries.
Carrick could bring Conway back into the starting lineup after benching him against his former club at the weekend, and he should aid Emmanuel Latte Lath up top. The Ivorian is waiting to get going in the second tier this term with just one goal so far, having netted 16 times last season.
Finn Azaz and Ben Doak should complete the attacking lineup against the Blades. Aidan Morris looks likely to get the nod again to join Hayden Hackney in midfield, although he faces competition from both Riley McGree and Dan Barlaser.
For Sheff Utd, they are without the services of midfielder Vinicius Souza for the trip to Teesside through suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign at Elland Road last time out.
Tom Davies also remains in the treatment room for the Blades, so it looks like Sydie Peck would come into the lineup to partner Ollie Arblaster in the engine room. Hamer and Callum O'Hare should continue in attack to support Kieffer Moore, while we could see Jesurun Rak-Sakyi come into the fold if Chris Wilder alters his team's shape.
This could also lead to Chelsea loanee Alfie Gilchrist coming into the side at right-back to support Anel Ahmedhodzic, Harry Souttar and Harrison Burrows.
Middlesbrough to win @ 21/20
Boro may have lost their last two matches but it is fair to say that they have been unlucky. Carrick's men have created a lot of chances but haven't been ruthless enough with them. They have then either been sloppy at the back or picked off on the break with the goals they have conceded, something which they cannot afford against the Blades.
They were stunned at home against the Robins at the weekend but the good thing is they get a quick turnaround to have another go at getting back to winning ways on home soil. After watching Sheff Utd get handed their first defeat of the season at Leeds, they will look to capitalise on this as the visitors have another tough trip to a side gunning for promotion this year.
Souza is going to be a big loss in the middle of the park for Wilder, and this is another factor that could play into Middlesbrough's hands on Wednesday night. The hosts have been playing well despite two defeats on the bounce, so they don't need to change too much for their game plan here.
They just need to be more clinical with the chances they create because the Blades are a side that will punish you if you don't.
That being said, the visitors' confidence will have taken a huge hit at Elland Road and now might be the perfect time to face as them as they regroup. So I'm of the persuasion that we will see Boro bounce back with a valuable three points at the Riverside against one of their biggest promotion rivals.
What I also found interesting was that Middlesbrough have prevailed in four of their last five home matches against Wednesday's opponents, so I believe we could see this trend continue as well.

Under 2.5 goals @ 4/5
However, this is a contest in which I am not expecting an abundance of goals. For as much as these two teams have looked like strong promotion contenders, they haven't exactly been blowing teams away.
So that is why I think it might be worth backing under 2.5 goals on Wednesday night. This market has landed in seven of Boro's 10 league matches in 2024/25, including three of their five clashes at the Riverside.
For Sheff Utd, under 2.5 goals has been a winning selection has landed in all but one of their 10 fixtures in the second tier this campaign, including all five of their matches on the road.
I think we will see these two trends continue when they collide on the pitch, in what I am expecting to be a tight affair, even if I think Boro will come out on top.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
