Bristol City vs Wrexham Prediction: Morsy code for card?

Bristol City have got a home game against Wrexham to come on Tuesday night (19:45 GMT, Sky Sports+), and the Robins will need to secure all three points if they are to realise their dreams of reaching the top six for a second consecutive season.

Team News

Bristol City started with a midfield duo of Sam Morsy and Adam Randall in the win over Hull City, and it is likely that they stick with a similar XI given the 3-2 success last time out. 

With their FA Cup game vs Port Vale postponed, Gerhard Struber’s men have had over a week off since that victory, allowing them to get theri players up to full fitness - Luke McNally and Max Bird remain out however.

Wrexham will be without Matty James after he recently broke his finger - while Phil Parkinson rotated for the 1-0 cup success over Ipswich Town. Dom Hyam should return to the back three, with Ben Sheaf, Kieffer Moore and Issa Kabore all also expected to start having been benched in the cup win.

Bristol City are 21/20 to win this one, giving them an implied win probability of 56%, while Wrexham are 5/2 to take the win. A draw is 5/2 while over 2.5 goals is 12/5 and BTTS is 8/11.

In terms of goalscorers, Emil Riis is the favourite to score first at 9/2.

This game is so hard to predict that I am going to place my bottom firmly on the fence at Ashton Gate. Bristol City’s last home game ended in a 5-0 humiliation at the hands of Derby County, but there’s no doubt that that was an anomaly for Struber’s side. 

The win at Hull was impressive as a response, and I just think we will see a really even encounter, with goals likely at both ends. The Robins have the 13th-best home form in the Championship - middling - and Wrexham have the seventh best away form and should be good for a point on away soil. They’ve had to play a game this weekend where Bristol City didn’t, but I don’t think the ‘rest’ will provide too much of an advantage to the hosts here. Happy to plump for a draw to kick us off.

Sam Morsy to be carded @ 11/5 

It’s great to have Morsy back in the Championship isn’t it? The former Ipswich man loves a big tackle and he looks to be a really smart pick-up for Bristol City in January, bringing a wealth of experience to their midfield.

I’d hope he gets another start here given the showing at Hull, and given the hard running and physicality of Wrexham’s own midfield, I think he’s a decent shout for a card. He’s been booked twice in three Bristol City starts which tells you all you need to know, while for Ipswich 2023/24 he picked up a whopping 14 yellows.
