Sporting CP vs Kairat Prediction: Home side to win but goals won’t flow

Sporting CP host Kairat in their opening game of the Champions League 2025-26 season, with a kick-off time of 20:00 on Thursday night, live on TNT Sports Extra.

Sporting  

Sporting were going great guns last season in this competition before Ruben Amorim's departure was the catalyst for a series of poor results that saw them finish 23rd, unseeded, and exit in the Knockout Phase Play-Offs at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.  

But they went on to win the Portuguese League and the Portuguese Cup, for good measure.  

Their two main strikers from last season - Viktor Gyokeres and Conrad Harder - have moved onto pastures new but Colombian Luis Suarez has more than made up for their exits, with three goals for his new club side already. Away in Venezuela last week on international duty, he scored four in a 6-3 win. Some player.  

They also managed to keep hold of skipper Morten Hjulmand, who some considered to be even more important to the side than Gyokeres.   

FC Kairat Almaty  

Kairat did it the hard way to get this far, getting the better of Ljubljana, Kups and best of all, Celtic, to ensure their big payday in the Champions League Group Stages.  

No excuses for not being well-drilled. The Kazakhstan league started back in March and is still in action, so they've played 30 games already this 'season'. 

Curiously, they have two Portuguese players on their books - Jorginho and Luis Mata.    

They've been decent at the back of late, with four consecutive clean sheets, including two against Celtic.   

Match Winner odds. 

Sporting are 1/10 which is implied probability of 90.9%. It's a short price, yes, and not one we want to be wading in on at this early stage of the season, but you can see the logic behind it.  

It's 10/1 the draw (9.1%) and 28/1 the away win (3.4%) but those prices are like that for a reason.

Sporting to win and Under 3.5 Goals  

Some of the prices in this match seem to suggest that Sporting are going to go out there and absolutely batter their Kazakhstan opponents. I'm not so sure it will all be quite that easy.  

A reminder that Kairat kept clean sheets twice in matches against Celtic and though you could argue that Sporting are a considerably better side than Celtic these days, they deserve some respect for that. And as we said already, they've now had four clean sheets in a row and between late July and early August, they also kept three consecutive clean sheets.  

Sporting should win this, sure they should, but it could be a bit tighter than some of these market's odds suggest. Goal difference will be a consideration but not as much as just getting the job done and securing those points on the board, so 1-0 or 2-0 is very much a possibility.  

The home win with under 3.5 goals in the match at 6/5 looks the best wager of a game with not that much in the way of great bets.   

Anytime Goalscorers  

They're not giving much away on that man Suarez, just 8/15 to score anytime here and just 5/2 to be first goalscorer.   

Pedro Goncalves and Francisco Trincao, who have both been in decent form, are 4/5 and 10/11 to score anytime, while Hjulmand is 11/4 and the better pick of those three.
