Borussia Dortmund vs Athletic Club Prediction: BVB can impress

Borussia Dortmund took part in an enthralling 4-4 draw with Juventus in their Uefa Champions League opener, while their start to the Bundesliga season has also been fantastic.

Their next test in Europe comes as they host Athletic Club at Signal Iduna Park (20:00, TNT Sports 7). Athletic were beaten by Arsenal in their opener, and below you can find my Borussia Dortmund vs Athletic Club predictions. 

Team News

The main talking point for Dortmund will be the fitness of top scorer Serhou Guirassy. He was rested against Mainz having picked up a minor thigh injury, with Niko Kovac hoping his main man is back to trouble the Athletic defence. 

Emre Can (adductor), Julien Duranville (shoulder dislocation) and Aaron Anselmino (muscular problems) will all miss out, so Julian Brandt and Karim Adeyemi will start in the final third alongside either Guirassy or Maximilian Beier.

Ramy Bensebaini, Nico Schlotterbeck and Waldemar Anton should start as the back three in front of Gregor Kobel. 

Football Odds

As for Athletic Club, their main concern is surrounding Nico Williams. The club’s director of football Mikel Gonzalez said “hopefully we see him soon." However, he’s missed the last five games and is unlikely to start either way, along with long-term absentees Benat Prados and Unai Egiluz.

Unai Gomez should start in Williams’ place, while Gorka Guruzeta will lead the line, with Inaki Williams set to provide the threat from the right.

Dortmund are the 5/6 favourites to win this game, having won four out of five in the Bundesliga. That gives them an implied win probability of 55%, while Athletic Club are 3/1 to find an away win.

Borussia Dortmund to win @ 5/6

I think it makes sense to back Dortmund to win this game straight up, based on what we have seen so far this season. Kovac’s outfit have been sensational in the Bundesliga, winning their last four and their only dropped points of the season came at St. Pauli when Filippo Mane was sent off late on and they conceded twice to blow a 3-1 lead. 

Since then they have been faultless, winning four league games on the bounce to nil, and they should have beaten Juventus in the Champions League - once again conceding twice after the 90th minute to throw away all three points. It is those two late collapses that slightly concern me, and prevent me backing them to win this game to nil, although I do strongly believe they will get the job done in front of their own fans.
