Egypt were one of the many teams rated as potential Africa Cup of Nations winners before a ball was kicked but the Pharaohs now face a battle to even qualify for the knockout rounds.
Rui Vitoria’s men face a crucial final group-stage clash with Cape Verde on Monday night and they go into the game without their star man Mohamed Salah. The Liverpool forward appeared to pick up a hamstring injury in Thursday’s 2-2 draw with Ghana and will not be available to Vitoria in Abidjan.
Cape Verde have no injury concerns but boss Bubista may make chances in their final group-stage clash. The Blues Sharks are already assured of top spot in the section, and having fielded the same starting line-up in matches against Mozambique and Ghana there may be changes against Egypt.
The Pharaohs will be without star man Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet looks set to deputise for the Liverpool forward.
Over 2.5 goals @ 6/5
Egypt have collected just two points from their opening two Afcon matches and progress to the knockout stage is anything but assured for the Pharaohs.
Vitoria‘s men were certainly the better side in a 2-2 draw with Mozambique, where Egypt bossed the ball, won the shot count 15-6 and the corner count 7-2. However, that performance came with Salah in the side and the Liverpool forward’s injury has to be a blow to Egypt’s chances.
Cape Verde are assured of top spot in Group B after beating Ghana and Mozambique and perhaps Bubista will look to make changes to his side, which could open the door to the Pharaohs.
Egypt’s need for points is certain and that could lead to goals. There have been eight strikes in the Pharaohs two Afcon matches and Vitoria‘s men are likely to have to chase the game at some point, given their position in the group.
Cape Verde smashed three goals past Mozambique on Friday and the 6-5 about there being at least three goals in Monday's game looks a good bet.
Mostafa Mohamed to score at any time @ 13/8
Mostafa Mohamed has found the net in both of Egypt’s group-stage matches and the Nantes forward looks set to strike again. The 26-year-old has five goals in ten appearances for his club side this season and he has a ten-goal tally for his national side.
Salah is the Pharaohs regular penalty taker, but that position is up for grabs and Mohamed may get an opportunity to find the net from a spot kick.
The Nantes man is a nice price to score on Monday.
