We’ve got loads of action coming our way on Saturday afternoon, with games from up and down the English pyramid and across Europe to get stuck into. I am hoping for goals as I take a look at the BTTS Tips for Saturday, December 14. Christmas is coming, and as Father Christmas fills his sack, let’s hope the goals start rattling in to bring us some festive cheer.

BTTS Tips - Saturday, December 14

  • Newcastle United vs Leicester City @ 4/5
  • Wolves vs Ipswich Town @ 8/13
  • Derby County vs Portsmouth @ 10/11
  • Coventry City vs Hull City @ 8/11

Newcastle United vs Leicester City @ 4/5

Let’s kick things off in the Premier League with two teams that have been keen on goals this season. Ruud van Nistelrooy has rocked up at Leicester and is keen to make his mark, but even before his arrival they have been partial to BTTS. In fact, both teams have found the net in 13 of their 15 matches so far.

That means in 87 per cent of Leicester games, there have been goals at both ends, which is a higher percentage than any other Premier League team has clocked this term. With Van Nistelrooy’s input sparking four points from their last two outings and Jamie Vardy still scoring goals, they should be able to find the net against a leaky Newcastle defence.

The Magpies lost 4-2 to Brentford last time out, and prior to that, they drew 3-3 with Liverpool - so there’s plenty of goals in their games. I actually believe we are getting good value on BTTS in this one based on the statistics, as Eddie Howe’s side have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five matches. Leicester are on the up, and Newcastle look slightly dodgy. That’s a decent reason to back BTTS in this one.

Wolves vs Ipswich Town @ 8/13

A relegation six-pointer at this stage of the season brings huge pressure onto the shoulders of Gary O’Neil, but he appears to retain the backing of the board at Wolves. His side may be defensively weak, but they have a strong attack which makes them perfect for a BTTS selection.

The stats support this too. Wolves have seen both teams score in 80 per cent of their matches so far, with 12 of their 15 games ending with both teams on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, Ipswich are leaking goals for fun and it could cost them. BTTS has come in during 10 of their 15 matches, and they do pose an attacking threat. Against a Wolves team that has conceded a whopping 38 goals this season, they can find the net and make this pick a winning one.

Derby County vs Portsmouth @ 10/11

Another relegation battle, this time in the second tier. These sorts of games aren’t usually all that popular for BTTS, but I think there is good value to be had here. Only two of Portsmouth’s away games haven’t seen BTTS come in, while this has also been a winning selection in five of the last six league games at Pride Park.

There’s a few talented attackers on show, including Colby Bishop who has transformed Pompey since coming back into the team after his heart surgery. He has scored two in four appearances but has also brought others such as Josh Murphy into play which has added to the attacking threat.

Meanwhile, Derby have Jerry Yates, Kayden Jackson and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing to call upon for goals, and I think they can trouble a Pompey outfit that has conceded 30 goals in 2024/25. Derby themselves have conceded 26, so I think this selection offers the best value of the lot - at near EVS.

Coventry City vs Hull City @ 8/11

Let’s finish with my team, Coventry, as they host Ruben Selles’ Hull at the CBS Arena. Frank Lampard has won one, drawn one and lost one of his opening three games and the 2-0 defeat at West Brom in midweek was infuriating. The Sky Blues created a bucketload of chances, but conceded to WBA’s only two shots on target as their weak underbelly reared itself once more.

There have been defensive errors and goalkeeping errors of late, and the lack of quality across the back four is something that needs to be addressed in January. BTTS has now come in during 55% of their matches so far, and there’s nothing to suggest that they are going to improve at the back anytime soon.

Selles will get Hull City moving up the table meanwhile, and his first game in charge was a 1-1 draw with Watford. They have a decent amount of attacking talent and can trouble Coventry, but their own defensive vulnerabilities make me believe that both teams will find the net on Saturday.
