Newcastle United responded to their heavy defeat at Aston Villa by cruising past Ipswich Town in the Premier League last Saturday. The Magpies travel to Sussex on Sunday (14:30, Sky Sports Main Event) to face Brighton & Hove Albion as they look to strengthen their position in the top five.

The Seagulls have been tricky customers, though, and they have beaten the visitors twice already this season in all competitions. Read on for my Brighton vs Newcastle predictions, supported by the latest team news and match odds.

Team News

Brighton could have Jan Paul van Hecke back available at the weekend after suffering a nasty head injury against Brentford on April 19. The Dutchman missed last week's clash with West Ham United but we could see him return to the heart of the back line against Newcastle, which would allow Carlos Baleba to return to midfield.

Boss Fabian Hurzeler has also revealed that Igor Julio and Adam Webster have recovered from their hamstring problems and both are in contention to make Sunday's squad. Georginio Rutter has missed Brighton's past seven matches with an ankle issue but he is edging closer to a return, although Sunday may be too soon for the former Leeds United man.

Brighton vs Newcastle Stats

  • BTTS and over 3.5 goals has struck in Brighton's last three matches
  • Alexander Isak has two goals in his previous three PL appearances

Newcastle remain short in defensive areas as Jamaal Lascelles (knee) and Lewis Hall (foot) are ruled out through injury. Sven Botman returned to the squad against Ipswich following a spell on the sidelines, and he will be pushing for a return to the starting XI on Sunday.

The same goes for Anthony Gordon, who has been dropped for Harvey Barnes since his red card against Brighton in the FA Cup fifth round, which the Magpies lost 2-1 after extra time.

Eddie Howe is likely to stick with Barnes, however, as he has been performing well since his restoration to the XI and he has combined well with Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy.

Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock are set to make up the engine room, with Joelinton unavailable due to a knee injury.

Brighton vs Newcastle Odds

Brighton may only have one win in their last six Premier League games, but they have beaten Newcastle twice already this season, and they are 15/8 to make it three on Sunday.

The Seagulls have drawn two of their last five in the top flight, and their FA Cup meeting with Newcastle was level after 90 minutes. The stalemate is on offer at 11/4, which has an implied probability of 26.7%.

Newcastle are 11/8 to come away with the three points and gain some revenge on the hosts. The Magpies have won six of their past seven fixtures in the league, so this could be a shrewd selection.

With 22 goals in the Premier League, Magpies forward Isak leads the anytime goalscorer market at 23/20, while Danny Welbeck is the shortest-priced for the hosts at 15/8 - with the latter scoring in both meetings between the two clubs in 2024/25.

Both teams to score and over 3.5 goals @ 6/4

I've thought about it and I think the smartest thing I can do here is avoid backing a result. Newcastle are in greater form than the hosts but they have been bested by them twice already this campaign, so one to not get pulled into in my opinion.

I'm going for goals instead and the BTTS and over 3.5 goals selection catches my eye. This has been a winning selection in each of Brighton's previous three appearances in the top flight, two of which have been on home turf.

This has been a successful bet in two of Newcastle's past four games in the league, but over 3.5 goals on its own has landed in three of their last four.

The Magpies are still fighting to return to the Uefa Champions League stage next season, while Brighton are hoping to get back into Europe themselves, as they are level with Fulham in eighth.

This is set up to be a cracking encounter and I think the goals can flow in Sussex, with both teams getting on the scoresheet.

Alexander Isak anytime goalscorer @ 23/20

Isak is someone who can have a big impact on this contest. The Sweden international already has 22 goals in the top flight and with four games left to play, he's likely to be striving to get as close to the 30-mark as possible.

Mohamed Salah leads the scoring charts with 28 and Isak will try and push the Egyptian all the way in the race for the Golden Boot. The Newcastle striker has two goals in his previous three matches coming into Sunday, so confidence shouldn't be an issue.

It may have only been from the penalty spot, but Isak has already scored against Brighton this term, which is another boost for him heading to the Amex. This feels like a game that can deliver an abundance of goals, and so I feel I have to back the most prolific player on the pitch to find the net.
