Fabian Hurzeler's first season in charge of Brighton & Hove Albion promised so much, and an eighth-place finish was respectable, but there was definitely a feeling of an opportunity missed as the Seagulls missed out on European football.

The German head coach will be hoping for an improvement in 2025/26, and a return to a continental cup competition will surely be on the agenda. Below are Betfred's Brighton Premier League Odds, accompanied by a discussion on their upcoming campaign and who is likely to be their main man.

Prediction: 9th

After years of bringing in the big bucks for stars such as Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo, Brighton finally splashed the cash themselves last summer, spending over £200m on players including Georginio Rutter, Brajan Gruda and Yankuba Minteh.

Expectations, then, were high heading into the 2024/25 campaign, and back-to-back victories in the first two gameweeks, and just one defeat in their first nine matches, started to justify the hype surrounding the Seagulls and their young head coach, Hurzeler.

However, the South Coast side were held 1-1 at home by Southampton on November 29, and that was the beginning of an eight-game winless run that was only ended on January 16.

Premier League Odds

There was another lengthy wait for a victory in the spring, as the Seagulls went five matches and over a month without one, and that proved fatal for their European aspirations.

Despite a strong end to the campaign, with four wins from their last five outings, Brighton finished eighth, four points behind the final European spot.

Joao Pedro has since been lured to Stamford Bridge by Chelsea, depriving the South Coast side of their 10-goal Brazilian marksman, but they've not been shy again in the transfer market, signing exciting 18-year-old Greek forward Charalampos Kostoulas, Italian defender Diego Coppola, and Belgian full-back Maxim De Cuyper, among others.

The Brighton hierarchy, and Hurzeler for that matter, will be looking to improve on last season's standing, but with most clubs above them strengthening, is that achievable?

Transfer Business:

In: Maxim De Cuyper (Club Brugge), Olivier Boscagli (PSV Eindhoven), Diego Coppola (Hellas Verona), Charalambos Koustoulas (Olympiacos), Tom Watson (Sunderland), Yoon Do-young (Daejon).

Out: Joao Pedro (Chelsea), Pervis Estupinan (AC Milan), Simon Adringra (Sunderland), Valentin Barco (Strasbourg), Ibrahim Osman (loan, Auxerre), Evan Ferguson (loan, AS Roma), Eiran Cashin (loan, Birmingham City), Malick Yalcouye (loan, Swansea City), Yoon Do-young (loan, Excelsior).

Key Player: Georginio Rutter

We saw flashes of Rutter's brilliance last season, but not enough to justify the club-record fee spent on the Frenchman.

Rutter only made 19 Premier League starts, coming off the bench eight times, as he struggled with an injury, and he ended the campaign with just five goals and three assists.

With Joao Pedro now at Chelsea, Rutter will be expected to step up and fill the goalscoring and creative void left by the Brazilian.

Football Odds

The 23-year-old struck seven times and registered 16 assists for previous club Leeds United in the EFL Championship, and the onus is on him to make the step up to top-tier football in England.

Should he stay injury-free this season, I'm confident Rutter can silence the critics.

Prediction: 9th

This marks a downturn from last season's performance, but I don't think it would be disastrous by any stretch of the imagination.

Manchester United, who finished 15th in 2024/25, have spent nearly £200m on a new front three and won't have European football to contend with this term, so I think they are one team who could finish above the Seagulls, while 17th-placed Spurs should be much-improved under new boss Thomas Frank.

Brighton have the potential to trouble the top-six spots, but they showed too many inconsistencies last season for me to truly believe in their European credentials.
