Borussia Monchengladbach are taking a break from their upturn in form in the Bundesliga when they host St. Pauli at Borussia-Park in the last-16 of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday (17:00 GMT). Die Fohlen have won five of their last six competitive matches heading into this contest.

The visitors are still struggling in the German top flight, having lost nine successive league games in a row. Below you will find my Borussia Monchengladbach vs St. Pauli predictions, supported by the latest team news and match odds.

Team News

Eugen Polanski has had a positive impact at Borussia-Park since replacing Gerardo Seaone as head coach in September, firstly on a caretaker basis. But with results and improving performances, he was given the job full-time on November 18.

Die Fohlen have really grown in the past month and they have alleviated a lot of concerns. They have built some strong momentum in recent weeks but there may be a few changes here so that some key players are rested for a trip to bottom-of-the-table Mainz on Friday, which is a very quick turnaround.

Polanski may leave a couple of regulars in the XI, such as Nico Elvedi and Rocco Reitz, while Tim Klendienst could be given a start here as he continues to build up his fitness following a spell on the sidelines.

Wide man Nathan N'Goumou remains unavailable due to a ruptured Achilles back in April.

Football Odds

Ben Alexander Voll was deployed between the sticks for St. Pauli in the previous round of the cup, so he may be handed another opportunity against Gladbach. Adam Dzwigala may be stationed in a back three for the visitor, while Connor Metcalfe could come into the midfield.

There could be other changes afoot given how much Alexander Blessin's side are struggling in the Bundesliga. Andreas Hountondji is their top scorer in the league with four goals so he could keep his place in the team - but he may also be preserved for the league clash at Koln on Saturday.

Borussia Monchenglabach vs St. Pauli Predicted Lineups

  • Borussia Monchengladbach: Cardoso; Scally, Elvedi, Friedrich, Ullrich; Reitz, Engelhardt; Reyna, Honorat, Neuhaus; Kleindienst
  • St. Pauli: Voll; Wahl, Smith, Dzwigala; Saliakas, Fujita, Metcalfe, Irvine, Oppie; Jones, Ceesay

Today's Football Fixtures

Borussia Monchengladbach vs St. Pauli Odds

Gladbach are 4/5 (implied probability of 55.6%) to prevail in regulation time, which they have managed in their two previous DFB-Pokal appearances this season.

St. Pauli have drawn in normal time in both rounds of the cup so far and the stalemate is priced at 13/5. The visitors are 3/1 to win in 90 minutes, something they have only managed once away from home all season.

They lost 4-0 at home to Gladbach in the Bundesliga on November 1 and BTTS - No is available at 11/10.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs St. Pauli Stats

  • Gladbach won 4-0 at St. Pauli in the Bundesliga on November 1
  • Shuto Machino (BMG) scored in that match

Price Boost - Gladbach to win both halves @ 4/1 9/2

Based on the scoreline of the league encounter a few weeks ago, backing Gladbach to win to nil appealed at 11/5, but then I caught the eye of this Price Boost, which is for the hosts to win both halves.

This has been a successful bet in each of Die Fohlen's past four competitive victories, including the 4-0 triumph against Tuesday's opponents. Polanski has instilled some much needing confidence into the Gladbach attackers and the team have scored 13 goals across those four victories.

St. Pauli will be perceived as a free hit here given how badly the season is unravelling for them. After starting the campaign with seven points from the opening three Bundesliga matches, they have since lost nine in a row. They have also required penalties to progress in the cup in both rounds so far.

I do think their journey will come to an end here, though, because Gladbach are starting to play with confidence and precision. The visitors still have a lot to figure out and given their current predicament, they probably cannot afford to pay any attention to the DFB-Pokal when they need to start turning their form around in the league.

Anytime Goalscorer - Shuto Machino @ 7/4

When it was announced that Gladbach had signed Shuto Machino in the summer, it felt like a real coup for the club, as the Japanese attacker had a respectable campaign with Holstein Kiel last term.

It's taken him a while to get going, which is hardly surprising given how the season started for his new club, but Machino is starting to settle into his new surroundings and he has been hitting form in recent weeks.

He's now up and running in the Bundesliga, opening his account in the 4-0 victory over Tuesday's opponents, before grabbing his second at Heidenheim just over a week ago.

Machino has also been on the scoresheet in this competition, having scored in his sole appearance against Karlsruher back in October. He may not be handed a start here but he may be given a run out later on in the game, and I fancy him to torment St. Pauli for the second time this season.
