If you like your Champions League football to come with a group stage, ignore the debacle that is currently occurring in the men’s game, and turn your attention to the women’s UCL. We’ve got four groups of four teams and some genuinely sensational fixtures to look forward to, not least on Wednesday night when Jonas Eidevall’s Arsenal travel to Germany to take on Bayern Munich at the FC Bayern Campus (17:45, DAZN).

It’s where our Football Bet of the Day comes from, as Alexander Straus attempts to secure an important victory in this Champions League opener.

  • Bayern Munich to beat Arsenal @ 23/20

I’m certainly not convinced by Arsenal at this moment in time, and I think Bayern will provide them with a really stern examination at this stage of the season. The Gunners seem to have run into seriously goalscoring difficulty over the past few weeks, first scraping past Leicester with a 1-0 win, before failing to beat Everton last time out in a 0-0 draw.

They’ve now only won two of their last five games, which doesn’t sound too bad, but for a team used to winning most matches they play, it is poor. During that run they have drawn 2-2 with early WSL leaders Man City, and alarmingly, lost 1-0 away from home to BK Hacken in the last round of this competition. They turned that two-legged tie around with a comfortable win on home soil, but that away performance, and some of the showings since have left alarm bells ringing in my head.

This is a big season for Eidevall as Arsenal look to kick on from back-to-back seasons in which they won the League Cup but finished third in the WSL. Their last league title came in 2019 and the Gunners are desperate to get back on top, and prove themselves in Europe once again. They lost in the first qualifying round to Paris FC last year, so just getting to this stage is an improvement on that, but standards have to be higher.

Bayern Munich vs Arsenal Odds

With Beth Mead, Alessia Russo and Mariona Caldentey working as a front three, there should be more attacking cohesiveness and excitement in this side, but we aren’t seeing it right now. I’m not sure they will be able to score against a solid Bayern Munich team, who they have history with. Lea Schuller scored the only goal when Bayern beat Arsenal 1-0 in Munich in the 2022/23 quarter-final first leg, but the Gunners once again turned the tie around with a 2-0 success at the Emirates.

Bayern meanwhile have made two big signings in recent years in the form of Lena Oberdorf and Pernille Harder. Harder is a familiar foe to Arsenal having spent the three seasons at Chelsea, while Oberdorf joined from Harder’s former club Wolfsburg, but picked up an unfortunate ACL injury in July. Both Harder and Bayern are still both searching for their first Champions League titles and the striker has made a strong start to the season, scoring a hat-trick against Hoffenheim and also bagging against Werder Bremen.

England’s Georgia Stanway is another big star in this Bayern side, and it feels as though they are ready to make a big leap forward in Europe. With Arsenal out of form, I think the Germans may secure a statement victory in the women’s Champions League on Wednesday night.
