Middlesbrough host Chelsea in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday night (20:00). The hosts were very underwhelming as they were knocked out of the FA Cup in their third-round clash against Aston Villa on Saturday, also at the Riverside.

They have now lost four of their last five home games and Chelsea will be fancying their chances to come away from the north east with the advantage in this cup tie. Mauricio Pochettino's side will head into this fixture full of confidence after their 4-0 victory over Preston North End in the FA Cup over the weekend at Stamford Bridge.

Momentum is with them heading into the first leg of this semi-final and they will be raring to go. We have selected a market for this game as our bet of the day and it is weighted in the Blues' favour.

Football Bet of the Day - Tuesday 9 January

  • Chelsea to win to nil - 9/5

Michael Carrick's side did well to shut Villa out for the majority of the game on Saturday but there was a lack of quality on their part in the final third which they will need to drastically improve on against the Blues. If they wish to progress to the Carabao Cup final next month, they know that they need to take advantage of their home leg.

But playing away from home first could play into Chelsea's hands, especially after they brushed aside another Championship side a couple of days ago. And what would have been most pleasing for Pochettino in that victory is the fact that there were four different scorers as Armando Broja, Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling and Enzo Fernandez all got in on the action.

Of late it has seemed that Chelsea have been heavily reliant on summer signing, Cole Palmer, to deliver the goods in front of goal, but they cannot depend on him alone if they are to claw their way back into the European places in the Premier League.

While that is high on the agenda, reaching a cup final takes preference right now and Chelsea will need to replicate their performance against Preston because turning out at the Riverside will not be as straightforward as beating Championship opposition at Stamford Bridge.

Boro will take confidence from their display against Villa but with such a short turn around here, as well as player absences due to suspension, international duty and being cup-tied, Tuesday's clash could be significantly more difficult.

The visitors have personnel problems of their own, with several first-team stars being confined to the medical bay. But when you have spent hundreds of millions of pounds on your squad, Chelsea still have an abundance of talent to deploy against Middlesbrough and it should be too much for the second-tier outfit to handle.

Carrick's men will look to give Chelsea a tough time of it on Teesside as they did against Villa, but we doubt that they will have found their shooting boots in time for Tuesday's contest.

Chelsea's tails are up and we expect to see this on the pitch at the Riverside. We fancy them to win to nil.

Chelsea to win to nil at 9/5
