Football Bet of the Day: Salzburg to take charge of tie

My football bet of the day for Tuesday focuses on the Champions League third round qualifying tie between RB Salzburg and FC Twente at the Red Bull Arena (KO, 19:45).

After next week's return in the Netherlands, the winner will progress to the play-offs, which is just one step away from the competition's new-look group phase.

After a decade of dominance in the Austrian Bundesliga, RB Salzburg failed to win the title last season, meaning they find themselves in unfamiliar territory.

The Austrian Bundesliga champion qualifies automatically for the Champions League group stages, but this year that honour has gone to Sturm Graz, who pipped Salzburg to the title on the final day of the 2023/24 season.

As a result, head coach Gerhard Struber paid the price and was replaced by former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders, who's start to life at the Red Bull Arena couldn't have gone much better.

Salzburg enjoyed an unbeaten pre-season, winning all but one game, and then progressed to the next round in the Austrian Cup with a 6-0 romping of Dornbirn before winning their opening league match of the new season against Grazer AK, despite surrendering a two-goal advantage.

Salzburg were eliminated from the group stages in last season's competition, finishing fourth behind Real Sociedad, Benfica and Inter Milan, and Lijnders will have his eyes set on getting his side back into Europe's premier club competition.

Meanwhile, Twente are hoping to make it back to the big time after a 14-year absence. Two years ago, the Dutch side finished fourth in the Eredivisie which saw them qualify for the Europa Conference League - their first return to Europe in eight years - then after missing out on European qualification again, they bounced back strongly last term, finishing in third spot in the league.

Despite their lofty league finish, Joseph Oosting's side won just one of their final five away games last season and they may unable to keep Salzburg at bay here as they have conceded in eight of their last 10 matches. After a 14 years away, the Dutch side may find themselves vulnerable at this level, against their more experienced opponents.

Salzburg have hit the ground running domestically this term and should be full of confidence that they can establish a first-leg lead to take to the Netherlands next week, so I'm taking them to win both halves on Tuesday night in front of their own fans.
