Football Bet of the Day: Hammers may fall short against Freiburg

The Europa League returns on Thursday night and we’ve taken a look at the action to come up with our Football Bet of the Day for the 14th December 2023.

West Ham United’s Europa League adventure continues on Thursday night as they host Freiburg, with both clubs already safely through into the knockout stages. They share an identical record so far, both winning four of their five matches, and although the German side boast a far superior goal difference, the Hammers hold top spot thanks to the 2-1 win they got at Stade Europa-Park. 

Now David Moyes knows that avoiding defeat will secure top spot for his side and give them a beneficial draw, after they won the Europa Conference League last term. However, Freiburg know only three points will do in their hunt for top spot. They also come into this one in far better form than their English opponents. 

After securing a major win at Spurs, West Ham were battered 5-0 by London rivals Fulham - a result that irked some of their fanbase. Moyes has done brilliantly again this season to lead them into the top half of the league while navigating this Europa League group, but still doesn’t get the credit he deserves. 

Freiburg’s quality has shone through in recent weeks after a slow start to the season. They are now 8th in the Bundesliga, but are now unbeaten in their last four games in all competitions. Across their last three matches, they’ve recorded three wins without conceding a goal, including a 5-0 win over Olympiakos in their last Europa League outing.

Given West Ham may have had their confidence dented and have half an eye on a busy upcoming festive period, Freiburg will fancy their chances of coming away with all three points. Given the parity in quality between the two sides, it feels like the price of 16/5 on Freiburg to win is incredibly generous.
