Monday sees the return of international football, after the major competitions in Europe were wrapped up on Saturday night. Now all the attention is on the various nations as they begin their preparations for Euro 2024, a tournament that begins on June 14.

England are in action against Bosnia-Herzegovina on home soil, but our focus for the Football Bet of the Day is the Euro 2024 hosts Germany, as they take on Ukraine in another warm-up game.

Football Bet of the Day - Monday, June 3

  • Germany to win with -1 handicap @ 21/20

Julian Nagelsmann’s side have turned a corner ahead of the Euros. They looked like rank outsiders just six months ago, and there was genuine fear that they could flop on home soil. They lost to Turkey and Austria at the end of 2023 and having tried to play Kai Havertz at left-back, there was a real concern that Germany were going to embarrass themselves on the big stage this summer.

However, two impressive March wins with performances to match, have brightened the mood for Die Mannschaft. They beat France 2-0 away from home and then won against the Netherlands 2-1 on home soil. Securing impressive victories against two of Europe’s best after a less than ideal run into the tournament has allowed them to turn a corner, and it feels like Nagelsmann has landed on his preferred system.

Havertz is no longer being tried on the left, and instead he is now the number nine, where he has had success this season for Arsenal. Simplicity is key for Germany in this European Championships, where backed by a vocal home crowd, they will look to go deep into the competition, just as they did when they hosted the World Cup back in 2006.

Havertz is going to be supported by Ilkay Gundogan, Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, while with Joshua Kimmich and Bayer Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich locking down the midfield, Germany have a perfect blend of youth and experience. Wirtz and Musiala are special players, and Toni Kroos will wave goodbye to football on home soil.

They’ve got a real chance this summer, and another couple of confidence-boosting wins should help them attack the tournament when it gets underway against Scotland on Friday, June 14. They face Ukraine on Monday night (19:45, Premier Sports 1), and although Ukraine have qualified for Euro 2024, Germany should win this game comfortably.

Serhiy Rebrov’s men drew with Italy in their final qualifier and have since beaten both Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland by two goals to one. It’s been a winning 2024 so far, but not a convincing one and I feel they could get exposed against a much higher level of opposition.

For this reason, my Football Bet of the Day for Monday, June 3 is Germany to win with a -1 handicap at 21/20. I think the hosts will have a point to prove and will want to head into the Euros full of confidence, with just 180 minutes of football between them and their curtain-raiser vs Scotland.
