Football Bet of the Day: Genoa going for back-to-back wins

There is a double dose of Serie A action on Friday evening but the pick of the action comes from the Luigi Ferraris Stadium, where Genoa play host to an out-of-sorts Verona.

Big things were expected of Verona following their fast start to the Serie A season but things have quickly unravelled for Marco Baroni's men.

Verona won their opening two league fixtures, including claiming the scalp of Roma in a 2-1 victory, but they haven't won since and those heady days are a distant memory already.

Things have been slightly better for Genoa, but they are plagued by inconsistency and haven't strung together back-to-back wins in this campaign.

However, they have a good record on their own patch against this week's opponents, so a comfortable home win looks like the best play on Friday.

  • Genoa to win to nil v Verona @ 9/5

Verona avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, but a fast start to the new campaign suggested things might be better for them this time around.

However, after winning their opening two league matches of the season, things have taken a turn for the worst and Verona are on a ten-match winless streak.

The Gialloblu have lost their last five matches in all competitions and it is hard to see them arresting their slump this week at a venue where they have traditionally struggled.

Verona have never won at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in eight attempts, and they have picked up just two draws in that sequence. Their last visit resulted in a thrilling 3-3 draw in September 2021, but it is hard to see them repeating that feat.

Three of the last four meetings between these two have ended all-square but a home win looks more likely in this latest showdown.

Genoa have failed to hit top gear this season, too, but they have picked up seven of their 11 points on home soil so far, with a 4-1 win over Roma their brightest spot in this campaign.

It looks a stretch to think they can produce something similar to that on Friday, but a comfortable home win looks a genuine possibility.

The Rossoblu have also held champions Napoli to a 2-2 draw this season and they have lost just two of their five home league outings on their way to 14th-place in the Serie A standings.

So home advantage could prove crucial for them against a Verona side who have lost four of their last five away league games.

With only three goals scored in six away matches, the visitors may struggle to make a breakthrough and, in what could be a nervy contest between two bottom-half teams, Genoa could edge a narrow contest in which they can keep a clean sheet.

Alberto Gilardino's side have kept just two clean sheets this season but the chance to improve that tally against such shot-shy opposition looks possible on Friday.

Verona have fired blanks on four of their last five away trips and, with confidence low in the visiting camp, they may struggle to make their presence felt at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.
