Football Bet of the Day: Corners the order of the day at the Kenny

Our focus for Friday’s Football Bet of the Day takes us to Kenilworth Road where Luton Town, only relegated from the Premier League last season let us not forget, are in the midst of another relegation battle. They currently sit in the bottom three after 11 games, and their dreams of an instant return to the top flight have seemingly already faded.
They host West Brom on Friday night under the lights (20:00, Sky Sports Main Event), and we’ve taken a slightly different approach to our Football Bet of the Day for this one. Take a look below and see what you think.
Football Bet of the Day - Friday, November 1
- Luton vs West Brom - Over 11.5 corners @ 11/10
Now I thoroughly enjoyed previewing this game for Betfred Insights, and having taken in more Championship football than you can imagine already this season, I’m ready for another hit of the second-tier on Friday night.
As I suggested in my Luton vs West Brom prediction, I don’t think this will be a particularly entertaining encounter in terms of goals. West Brom have drawn three of their last four games 0-0, and Luton are lacking confidence at the moment. When you throw a whole host of defensive injuries into the mix, things become slightly more difficult to nail down, but I do believe I’ve found another angle to go at for this Friday night fixture.
Corners. Now I’m usually one to stay away from backing corner bets as sometimes there are too many variables to nail down. However, when a team consistently posts high corner numbers, it is for a reason. They are getting crosses into the box and shots at goal, attempting to use their physicality to gain an advantage over their opponents.
Luckily for us, that describes both Luton and West Brom in a nutshell. The Hatters, along with Sheffield Wednesday, are averaging the most corners per match this season at 7.50. They’ve also got one of the highest corner averages (for and against) in the Championship at 12.42 per 90 minutes and it’s easy to see why.
Luton play with attacking wing-backs and two big physical strikers in the form of Carlton Morris and Elijah Adebayo. Those two are difficult for any defence to handle and can often bully their centre-backs. It’s been Luton’s primary tactic for the last two seasons, and although they haven’t got the results so far, this is unlikely to change.
Unfortunately, Alfie Doughty is suspended for this one, but I don’t think that will harm the lack of corners Luton can get, it may just lower the quality of their delivery into the box at times. In the last three games the Hatters have been involved in there have been 16, 13, and 15 corners, with two of them coming at home.
Meanwhile, West Brom had a whopping 12 corners at home to Cardiff without finding the net last time out, while they also managed eight at Oxford and four at Blackburn in their last three games. They are another side who have plenty of quality in terms of set-piece takers, and despite their lack of centre-backs, should be able to cause problems.
With both defences having to make changes, I think that could lead to a bit more instability at the back, and as a result, more of those precious corners. Taking a look at the odds, I think setting the bar high and going for over 11.5 corners in this match is the right selection, so that is our Football Bet of the Day for Friday, November 1.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
