Benfica had a heartbreaking end to their domestic campaign as they were pipped to the Liga Portugal title by Sporting CP, before also losing the Taca de Portugal final to the same team, despite leading in the 100th minute.

Now the Portuguese giants will turn their attention to the Club World Cup in the United States of America. Hoping to end their season with a dose of positivity, below you can find the Benfica Fifa Club World Cup 2025 predictions.

Player to watch: Kerem Akturkoglu

Benfica could have been celebrating a fantastic end to the season, but instead they have been left stunned heading to the Club World Cup. They won 25 of their 34 league games but 80 points wasn’t enough - as they failed to beat Sporting in the penultimate game.

The cup final defeat was also brutal, as Viktor Gyokeres converted a 111th-minute penalty to prevent the Eagles lifting the trophy after normal time, before Sporting went on to win the game in extra time. Bruno Lage only returned to the club in September and has done a good job again, but they’ve only won one league title in the last six years and that has to be the aim moving forward.

The strange four-year qualification period for this Club World Cup means that Sporting, who have won the last two Portuguese titles aren’t present, but Benfica and Porto are. Anyway, enough of that nonsense, let’s assess their chances of doing something special.

Player to watch: Kerem Akturkoglu

You may have expected me to name top scorer Vangelis Pavlidis as the one to watch, given he scored 29 goals this season, including seven in 12 Champions League appearances. Although he could play a big part, I’m more excited by Turkish winger Kerem Akturkoglu, who has been flying in his debut season in Portugal.

The 26-year-old joined from Galatasary last summer and has torn it up, bagging 18 goals and 16 assists in all competitions. Benfica feels like the perfect platform for him, and he has flourished under Lage this term. Playing on the wing with a big centre-forward up top is certainly helping him but it is skillful dribbles I’m keen to watch against some bigger clubs. An exciting prospect who could catch the eye.

Benfica to qualify from Group C @ 8/15

I think Benfica are in a decent position to reach the last 16 based on how the group stage should pan out. They are in with German giants Bayern Munich, who may win three from three and minnows Auckland City, who are incredibly likely to finish pointless after their three matches.

That means it comes down to a straight shootout between Benfica and Boca Juniors for second place. In that scenario, I’d like to back the Portuguese outfit to come out on top of that battle if it comes down to it, while I also think it’s not out of the question that they could pick up a point against Bayern. If they finish second, Chelsea are their likely last 16 opponents, so I won’t back them to go any further, but I think it’s sensible to pick Benfica to qualify from Group C.
