As far as entertainment goes, few sides have provided as much as Barça this season in Europe's major leagues. The Catalans giants have rattled in 113 goals already in all competitions, but they have still been beaten on six occasions, with three of their last five home fixtures in La Liga ending in defeat.

That will give some hope to Rayo Vallecano who were a real bogey side for Barcelona during Andoni Iraola's successful reign. Following promotion in 2021, the Madrid-based club avoided defeat in each of their first five top flight fixtures against Barça, a run that included a 1-0 win at Camp Nou in April 2022.

However, they did lose both games against this opposition in 2024, with half-time substitute Dani Olmo the inspiration as Hansi Flick's side came from behind to win 2-1 at the Estadio de Vallecas earlier this term.

The home supporters will be hoping that they've now finally laid the Rayo curse to rest, and they'll be expecting victory on Monday night. It has already been an excellent weekend for Barça, with both of the Madrid clubs dropping points on Saturday, and victory here would send them to the summit of La Liga for the first time in 2025.

Unlike Real Madrid, there are no Champions League play-off distractions for the Catalans, so Flick's squad should be refreshed and raring to go here, with eight days having passed since their last match, a 4-1 victory at Sevilla.

That came on the back of a 5-0 win at Valencia in the Copa del Rey, and it feels as though Barcelona are now firmly over their slump at the end of last year. They've won nine and drawn two of their 11 competitive fixtures since returning from the break over the festive period.

Despite their stunning overall goalscoring record, it is still true that Barça have at times struggled to break down their more cautiously-minded opponents. They needed a 61st minute strike from top scorer Robert Lewandowski to seal a scrappy 1-0 win against struggling Alavés in their most recent home game, and it's going to be very interesting to see how visiting boss Iñigo Pérez approaches this.

Pérez, who was previously Iraola's assistant at Rayo Vallecano, has made tweaks to the approach of the now Bournemouth boss, but the fundamentals are still largely the same, with what is broadly a 4-2-3-1 system, and a high-pressing approach that has frequently troubled the big clubs in Spain.

Rayo's average of 13.1 shots per game is the fourth highest in La Liga, and while they've often been wasteful with their finishing, with the absence of a convincing striker the most obvious flaw, they've really hit form of late.

Heading into this game, Rayo have gone nine without defeat in the league, winning their last three. There was a thrilling 3-3 draw at home against Real Madrid at the start of that run, but they've been more dependent on their defensive qualities in recent weeks, grinding out 1-0 wins over Leganés and Real Valladolid in their last two matches.

That leaves Pérez's side in the top six and defying all pre-season expectations heading into this match. Rayo have never finished higher than 8th in the top flight, but European qualification is now a realistic possibility for the side from the Spanish capital.

Team News:

Barcelona are missing Fermín López to suspension, after the midfielder saw red in the second half against Sevilla last time out. They are also still without the injured trio of Marc-André ter Stegen, Andreas Christsensen and Marc Bernal.

Flick is likely to recall Pau Cubarsí in central defence, after the teenager was rested at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. There's also real competition in midfield now, with Frenkie de Jong, Marc Casadó, Gavi and Dani Olmo battling for two places, alongside the impressive Pedri.

As for Rayo, they head into this match with a couple of fresh injury blows. Striker Sergio Camello has fractured a metatarsal which is likely to rule him out until April. Meanwhile, midfielder Unai López also limped off against Real Valladolid last time out, and hasn't recovered in time for this one.

Randy Nteka and Pedro Díaz are likely to come into the side as a result. Pérez will want to keep any other changes to a minimum though, with his team playing well.

Barcelona vs Rayo Vallecano Odds

Despite their impressive form, Rayo are huge underdogs at 12/1 to win this match. You can back Barcelona to win at 1/5, while the Draw is priced at 6/1.

If you're expecting the visitors to again prove difficult opponents for Barcelona, you can back Rayo Vallecano or Draw at 16/5 in the Double Chance market. Rayo Vallecano +2.00 Handicap is also on offer at 11/8, while the away team are priced at 7/2 to win either half.

On the other hand, you can back the hosts to turn on the style again, with Barcelona -2.00 Handicap available at 13/10. Barça are priced at 13/8 to score over 3.5 goals, a winning bet on 16 occasions already this season in all competitions.

With no midweek games either side of this, Flick is strongly expected to start his regular front three. Lewandowski is the 8/15 favourite to score anytime, while you can back Raphinha to get on the scoresheet at 19/20. Lamine Yamal is on offer at 7/5 to score anytime, with the 17-year-old also priced at 7/5 to register 1+ assists.

From a visiting perspective, Nteka is the player most likely to start up front in the absence of Camello, and he's priced at 18/5 to score anytime.

Bet 1 - Barcelona win & Under 3.5 goals @ 8/5

Barcelona matches this season have either tended to be wildly open games with loads of goals, or much cagier affairs with Flick's men needing to be patient as they bid to unlock the defences of teams that essentially park the bus.

While Rayo are a team that likes to take risks and commit bodies forwards at times, Iñigo Pérez is shrewd enough to know that an open contest with lots of space is unlikely to end well for his side here, given the quality in the home ranks.

They tend to be a lot more defensive away from home in any case, with Rayo's road games in La Liga this term averaging just 1.58 goals. On current form, they look capable of competing here, but the opposition is much stronger than what they've faced in recent weeks, and I'm backing Barcelona to win and Under 3.5 goals at 8/5.

Bet 2 - Robert Lewandowski to score first @ 11/4

Lewandowski has had his critics during his time in Barcelona, and even in recent weeks there have been voices suggesting the team has functioned more effectively when Ferran Torres has rotated in.

However, Flick remains very loyal to the Polish international. That's no surprise given there is no sign of the 36-year-old losing his extraordinary goalscoring instincts that have made him one of the very few outstanding strikers in Europe over the past 15 years.

He currently leads the Pichichi race with 19 goals in 22 league outings this season. 63% of those goals have come in the first half, with Lewandowski tending to do his damage early, and I'm backing him to score first at 11/4 in this game.
