Sydney vs Newcastle Jets Prediction: Adams on target in six-goal thriller?

Newcastle Jets went undefeated across their first 10 games of 2026, collecting 28 points from 30 available, but they fell to their first loss of the calendar year last weekend at home to Auckland FC (1-2), who could replace them at the top of the Australian A-League Men's on Saturday with a victory over Macarthur FC.
The Jets can reclaim their leaders tag on Sunday, though, when they take on Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium (04:00 GMT, TNT Sports 1). Below are my Sydney vs Newcastle Jets predictions, alongside all the latest team news and match odds.

Team News
Joe Lolley (ankle) remains Sydney's only injury absentee.
As for Newcastle Jets, Clayton Taylor, who scored a 28th-minute equaliser in last weekend's 2-1 loss to Auckland FC before being forced off with a hamstring injury seven minutes later, has been ruled out of Sunday's trip to Sunday.
The eight-goal winger joins the likes of Zach Clough (groin), Alexander Badolato, Christian Bracco and Oscar Fryer (all ACL) in the Jets treatment room.

Sydney vs Newcastle Jets Stats
- Two of the last three H2Hs have produced five goals
- NEW (44) are the highest-scoring side in 25/26 ALM
- Adams (NEW) has scored five goals in 17 ALM apps this season
Total Goals - Over 5.5 @ 4/1
I think this could be one of those mad games that we see in the ALM from time to time, with at least six goals scored in Sydney.
The Jets are the league's highest-scoring side with 44 goals, but they've also conceded 32, with their games averaging 3.61.
Sydney, surprisingly, have scored just 28 times, and heading into the weekend, boasted the joint-best defensive record with Auckland FC, conceding only 21 goals, with their games averaging 2.33.
However, there is plenty of attacking firepower in their squad, even without four-goal forward Lolley, with mid-season recruits Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Ahmet Arslan both on target in their 2-2 draw with Melbourne Victory at Allianz Stadium earlier this month.
There haven't been six goals scored in a game between Sydney and Newcastle since the Sky Blues' 4-3 win at McDonald Jones Stadium in April 2015, but five of the last six meetings have gone over 3.5, and two of the last three have produced five exactly.
Two of the Jets' league matches this season have gone over 5.5 goals, the first a 5-2 hammering of Melbourne Victory at McDonald Jones Stadium last October, and the second a 5-4 defeat there to Macarthur FC on Boxing Day.

Anytime Goalscorer - Eli Adams (NEW) @ 15/8
With his opposite winger, Taylor, out injured, more will be expected on Sunday from Jets star Eli Adams, who has only scored once across his last seven appearances.
That strike, his fifth of the season, did come earlier this month, though, as he scored his side's equaliser in their 2-1 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers at McDonald Jones Stadium.
The 24-year-old, who struck nine times in 24 ALM appearances last season, has already found success in Sydney this calendar year, netting in the Jets' 2-1 win against the Wanderers at CommBank Stadium on January 17.
I'm a big fan of Adams, and I'm expecting him to step up on Sunday in the absence of Taylor.
