Aston Villa vs Newcastle Prediction: More Villa Park misery for the Magpies

Aston Villa begin their Premier League campaign with an interesting match-up as Newcastle United make the trip to Villa Park on Saturday (12:30, TNT Sports 1). The Magpies pipped the Villans to one of the Uefa Champions League spots this season, but in the final run-in, Unai Emery's side thrashed them 4-1 here.
Could we see something similar unfold this weekend? Read on to find out my Aston Villa vs Newcastle predictions, supported by the latest team news and match odds.

Team News
Evann Guessand, a summer arrival from Nice, will be pushing to make his Villa debut on Saturday, and it helps that he can play a variety of positions in the forward line.
He faces a battle to lead the line against Ollie Watkins, who is Villa's all-time leading scorer in the Premier League with 75 goals. There have been whispers surrounding his future in the past 12 months, with links to both Arsenal and Manchester United, but with those two clubs signing forwards of their own this summer, a move to either of those clubs now looks unlikely.
More interestingly, Newcastle are supposedly keeping tabs on him in case Alexander Isak joins Liverpool this month, with the Sweden international downing tools in the hopes of moving to Anfield.
Jacob Ramsey is in the process of joining the Magpies in a £40m deal and he could be set for an immediate return to Villa Park this weekend if he is registered in time.
Aston Villa vs Newcastle Stats
- Villa have won eight of their last 10 home league games
- Ollie Watkins (AVL) has five goals in nine career appearances against Newcastle
Isak's situation is a poor look on him and Newcastle, as it suggests they are in turmoil behind the scenes. They are currently without a sporting director following Paul Mitchell's exit, while former Sunderland boss Jack Ross has come in as their new head of strategy.
Isak is currently refusing to play so it is highly unlikely he will be involved this weekend. This leaves only William Osula as their only recognised forward, which is troubling for the Magpies this deep into the summer.
Anthony Gordon could be deployed as a false nine as an alternative, and Eddie Howe may turn to new signing Anthony Elanga and Jacob Murphy to play on the wings.
Aaron Ramsdale may be considered to make his debut in goal ahead of Nick Pope following his loan switch from Southampton. The trusted midfield three of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton are likely to man the engine room.
Villa have won five of their last six home games against Newcastle and they are 5/4, which has an implied probability of 44.4%, to continue this trend on Saturday.
The Villans drew nine matches in the league last term and the stalemate is priced at 13/5.
Newcastle won 42% (8/19) of their away trips in the top flight in 2024/25 and they are 2/1 to come away with the three points.
There have been goals at both ends of the pitch in three of the previous four meetings between the two clubs and both teams to score is marketed at 8/15.
Aston Villa to win @ 5/4
Villa were disappointed after they failed to secure Champions League football for the second consecutive season, but Emery's men are now in the Uefa Europa League, a competition which their boss has conquered four times in the past 11 years.
They will have ambitions to win that competition, which would return them back to Europe's most elite competition, but they will also be searching for a higher league position in 2025/26.
They haven't conducted as much business as many would've expected by this stage of the transfer window, but they are likely to be busy before the window shuts on September 1.
Guessand is a smart pick up as he was attracting interest across Europe. He is the kind of profile that can flourish under Emery's management, so he could have a big role to play for Villa this term.
When looking at the two clubs heading into the first match, the hosts are in a much more stable position than the visitors, with the Isak tantrum leaving the Magpies in limbo.
Howe is trying to handle it as best as he can, but what can you do when your star man wants to leave and is behaving like a spoiled child? It's not fair on anyone in this situation and it can have a knock-on effect on Saturday's game.
Without their main source of goals, I think Newcastle will struggle in the West Midlands. Their players may also feel a little nervous returning to a stadium they got comfortably beaten in just a few months ago, so I think Villa will get off to a winning start.

Ollie Watkins anytime goalscorer @ 13/10
If Watkins remains at Villa Park this summer it would be a huge boost for the Villans, who have one of the best centre-forwards in the division. The striker has hit double figures for goals in each of his five seasons in the Premier League, totalling 75 across that period.
Losing that kind of output would be disastrous for Emery's side, especially with the Europa League to tackle as well.
The England international has a good record against Newcastle, having scored five goals against them across nine appearances, including one in the opening minute the last time the two teams met.
He's the favourite to score in this fixture for a reason.
