Nottingham Forest vs Midtjylland (20:00 BST, TNT Sports 1) - Nottingham Forest to Win @ 4/9
Midtjylland at home in the Europa League on a Thursday night at the City Ground - if Ange Postecoglou can’t record his first win as head coach of the Garibaldi against the Danish side, when will he?
Forest face a tough trip to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday, and after the October international break, they host Chelsea, before entertaining FC Porto in their third UEL match. Three days later, it’s Bournemouth away, and the next thing you know, you’re in November without a win.
Three points are a must on Thursday, and I think Postecoglou will get what he desires.
The Tricky Trees were close to claiming victory on MD1 as they came from behind to take a 2-1 lead in Seville, only for Antony to net an 85th-minute equaliser for Real Betis.
Midtjylland beat Sturm Graz 2-0 in their opening game, and are on a four-game winning run heading into Thursday’s fixture, but they’re not a side who should be feared by a club with the resources of Forest.
The Danes only won two of their five away games in the Europa League last season, and one of those victories came on neutral soil as they beat Israeli outfit Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-0 in Belgrade, Serbia. Midtjylland failed to score in 2-0 league-phase defeats to FCSB and Porto in Romania and Portugal, respectively, and were thrashed 5-2 by Real Sociedad in Spain in the second leg of their knockout phase play-off tie.
At home, I’m expecting Forest to prove too strong.
FC Porto vs Red Star Belgrade (20:00 BST, TNT Sports 8) - FC Porto to Win @ 8/15
Elsewhere in the UEL league phase, Porto host Red Star Belgrade at the Estadio do Dragao.
The Portuguese giants have started like a train this season, winning all eight games so far, which includes a 1-0 triumph at Red Bull Salzburg in their opening continental contest.
Red Star, on the other hand, were held to a 1-1 draw in Belgrade by Celtic on MD1, and struggled on their European travels last season, albeit in the league phase of the Uefa Champions League.
The Serbian side finished 29th in the 36-team table, losing six of their eight games, including three of their four away matches.
Red Star were beaten by both Milan clubs, Inter (4-0) and AC (2-1), in Italy, and suffered a 5-1 defeat to Monaco, before ending their campaign with a 1-0 win against Young Boys, who finished bottom on zero points, in Switzerland.
Porto have kept seven clean sheets this term and are yet to be breached at home, so it will take something special from Thursday’s visitors to deny Francesco Farioli’s charges from maintaining their winning streak.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Aurora vs Blooming (23:00 BST) - Aurora to Win @ 19/20
We head to South America for the final three games of this acca, starting in Bolivia, where Aurora take on Blooming in the Copa Pacena.
Aurora are top of the four-team Group C, but are only a point ahead of second-place SA Bulo Bulo, and two in front of GV San Jose (third) and Academia del Balompie (fourth), with six matches left to play, including Thursday’s fixture against Blooming at the Estadio Sudamericano Felix Capriles in Cochabamba.
Blooming are also first in their group, but boast a four-point lead on Bolivar in second, and are five and seven points ahead of Wilstermann (third) and Nacional Potosi (fourth), respectively.
A quick glance at the Bolivian Primera Division and Aurora’s recent results makes for poor reading, as Thursday’s hosts have lost their last three games and are bottom of the table, 17 points behind the nearest side, Wilstermann.
However, Aurora are only in 16th because they were docked 33 points as a player previously falsified his age. Without the points deduction, they would be ninth on 28 points, nine behind fourth-place Blooming.
Aurora’s three-game losing run can be explained, partly, by indiscipline. They’ve received a red card in each of their last three matches, and the second of those, a 2-1 home defeat to Tomayapo, saw them reduced to 10 men in the fourth minute; keeping 11 players on the field will be crucial to their chances of achieving a positive result on Thursday.
Blooming aren’t in good form either, though, as they have lost three of their last four games, including the last two, and have failed to score in all three defeats. Red cards have also cost them, as they’ve received five in their last four matches, including two in each of the last two.
La Academia Crucena have been particularly poor on their travels since the start of August, losing four out of five (W1), and on Thursday, they pitch up at a venue where they have lost on their last seven visits, including in the league on August 13 this year (4-1).
Vitoria vs Ceara (23:00 BST) - Ceara to Win @ 11/8
Over in Brazil, the first of two Thursday Serie A fixtures sees Vitoria host Ceara at the Barradao in Salvador.
Vitoria, who won Serie B in 2023, impressed in the top tier last season, finishing 11th in the 20-team table.
However, after 25 games played this year, they are 18th, six points behind Santos, who occupy the final survival slot.
Since beating Red Bull Bragantino 1-0 on July 20, Vitoria have won just once (D4, L5), and lost all three September fixtures, failing to score in the first two.
Meanwhile, Ceara, who snuck into fourth in last season’s Serie B to claim the final promotion place, are ‘doing a Vitoria’. After 24 games, they are 11th and will move into the top half with a win in Salvador.
Ceara endured a sticky patch recently, failing to win any of their last four games (D3, L1) heading into Tuesday’s match at Sao Paulo, but they stunned Hernan Crespo’s charges at the Estadio do MorumBIS, winning 1-0 thanks to a 56th-minute strike from Pedro Henrique.
Leo Conde’s side now look well placed to achieve back-to-back league victories for the first time this season, with Vitoria there for the taking on Thursday.
Ceara have been solid on their travels, with only five clubs picking up more points than their total of 13 from 12 games, while only three sides have accrued fewer points at home than Vitoria (17).
Vozao won the reverse fixture 1-0 on May 3, and are a nice price to do the double.
Fortaleza vs Sao Paulo (23:30 BST) - Under 2.5 Goals @ 4/7
Half an hour after Vitoria and Ceara kick off in Salvador, Fortaleza and Sao Paulo will begin their match at the Castelao.
The visitors, eighth-placed Sao Paulo, are 14 points ahead of second-bottom Fortaleza in Serie A, but their 1-0 defeat to Ceara on Tuesday was their fourth consecutive loss in all competitions - all without scoring. The first finished 2-0 in favour of Ecuadorian outfit LDU Quito, who also beat Crespo’s side 1-0 in the second leg of their Copa Libertadores quarter-final tie, three days after the Brazilians had lost 1-0 at Santos.
In truth, Sao Paulo matches have been starved of goals since the second half of August; their last eight have produced two or fewer, with five ending 1-0 (only one in their favour).
Across the season, Sao Paulo’s Serie A games are averaging 2.08 goals.
Fortaleza’s matches, meanwhile, are averaging 2.58 goals, but three of their last five, all at home, have gone under 2.5.
The last couple of head-to-heads between Fortaleza and Sao Paulo have been tight affairs; Fortaleza won last season’s corresponding fixture 1-0, while the reverse fixture this year finished in a goalless draw.
