Hungary (A) to beat Armenia (17:00) @ 4/7

Armenia were thrashed 5-0 by Portugal in their first home game of Group F, but last time out in Yerevan, they beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1.

At the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium on Thursday, Armenia host Hungary, who have drawn their first two away matches 2-2 (against Ireland and Portugal). Holding Portugal to a stalemate in Lisbon will always be considered impressive, and while a draw with Ireland on paper doesn’t look as good, it’s certainly respectable when you see that they were reduced to 10 men in the 52nd minute, and only conceded an equaliser in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.

Hungary won the reverse fixture 2-0 in Budapest last month, limiting Armenia to just eight shots, with only two on target.

It may not be pretty, but with a play-off spot in sight, I’m backing the visitors to claim all three points.

Football Odds

Iceland (A) to beat Azerbaijan (17:00) @ 1/2

Azerbaijan, who have picked up just a single point from 12 available in Group D, know that their qualification hopes are all but over.

On Thursday, they play host to Iceland, who need to at least match Ukraine’s result against France to prolong their chances.

Currently, Iceland are three points behind Ukraine, who they play in Warsaw, Poland, in their final group game on Sunday.

Our Boys haven’t won any of their last three matches, losing the first two away to France (2-1) and at home to Ukraine (3-5), but last time out, they held France to a more than creditable 2-2 draw in Reykjavik.

Next, Iceland take a trip to Neftci Arena in Baku to take on Azerbaijan, whom they battered 5-0 at home on September 5.

Azerbaijan have improved since then, drawing at home to Ukraine (1-1) before showing more fight in defeats to France (3-0) and Ukraine (2-1).

However, considering the reverse result and how much the visitors need to win on Thursday, it’s Iceland who I’m predicting to triumph.

Albania (A) to Win to Nil vs Andorra (19:45) @ 4/7

The third and final away side I’m backing to win on Thursday is Albania, who visit Andorra’s Estadi de la FAF in Encamp.

Unsurprisingly, Andorra are bottom of Group K, losing six and drawing one of their first seven games. With one final match remaining, they are guaranteed to finish fifth, and all that’s left for them is to restore a bit of pride.

The same can’t be said for Albania, who, a point ahead of Serbia with two qualifiers left to play, have a top-two finish in their destiny, although with Group K winners England pitching up in Tirana on Sunday, they will feel a victory is vital in Andorra.

Albania comfortably beat Andorra in March’s reverse fixture, winning 3-0 at Arena Kombetare and not even allowing their visitors to take a single shot.

Andorra, to their credit, scored twice in a 2-2 draw in Latvia on October 11 before opening the scoring in a 3-1 defeat to Serbia in Encamp three days later, but they had failed to fire in their five qualifiers.

Albania, who have kept four clean sheets in Group K, only conceded twice to England in a 2-0 defeat at Wembley on March 21 and in a 1-1 draw with Latvia in Riga on June 10, should be able to safeguard their goal once again on Thursday.

Republic of Ireland (H) +2 Handicap vs Portugal (19:45, Amazon Prime Video) @ 4/5

Defeat for Ireland against Portugal in Dublin, coupled with a win for Hungary in Armenia, would see the Boys in Green miss out on a top-two finish in Group F.

Ireland never really throw caution to the win, and it’s hard to see them doing so on Thursday in a must-not-lose game at home to a nation ranked fifth in the world by Fifa.

Of course, Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side will try to nick a win at home, but I think the emphasis will be on avoiding defeat and taking it to their final qualifier in Hungary on Sunday.

Portugal won their first three qualifiers but were held 2-2 at home by Hungary last time out, and in their reverse meeting with Ireland, only edged proceedings 1-0 thanks to a Ruben Neves strike in the first minute of second-half added time.

Plus, in their last away match, they only beat Hungary 3-2 thanks to an 86th-minute goal from Joao Cancelo.

Roberto Martinez’s side are also unlikely to go gung-ho at the Aviva Stadium, knowing that a draw could clinch qualification, or at least leave them only needing to draw at home to Armenia on Sunday.

Ireland have only lost two of their last eight games and both defeats were by a one-goal margin, so I’m happy to back the hosts on the +2 handicap here.

Ukraine (A) +3 Handicap vs France (19:45, Amazon Prime Video) @ 8/15

I’m also tipping Ukraine in the handicap market, but on the +3 rather than +2, as they face an even tougher encounter against France in Paris.

Les Bleus, who can qualify for next year’s finals with a win at the Parc des Princes, are unbeaten so far in Group D, securing victories in their first three games before being held to a 2-2 draw by Iceland last time out.

While Didier Deschamps’ side have picked up an impressive 10 points from 12 on offer, it’s not been all plain sailing for the 2022 finalists as they only edged out Iceland 2-1 in Paris on September 9, three days after beating Ukraine 2-0 in Wroclaw, where they only scored their second goal in the 82nd minute.

Since beating Israel 4-1 in October 2024, France have only beaten one team, Azerbaijan (3-0 last month), by a margin greater than two goals, despite playing 11 times.

Ukraine, meanwhile, have only been beaten by at least three goals on one occasion in their last 16 games (3-0 to Belgium on March 23).
