Freiburg (A) to beat Lille @ 11/4
We’ve got big for Thursday’s football acca, but I believe there’s a lot of sense behind my reasoning - so stick with me. We kick off with what I see as the best price of the lot. Freiburg have proven themselves to be an elite side in the Europa League this season - with five wins and two draws taking them to third in the table with one to play.
They are one point away from confirming their place in the top eight - but will want to finish as high as possible to secure the best possible draw. They are only one point off league leaders Lyon and could top the 36-team table with a win here. Lille are a very kind opponent, as they look absolutely dreadful right now.
The French side have lost their last five games on the bounce, and have lost four of their last five in Europe. Big price on an away win.
Lyon (H) to beat PAOK @ 4/6
We will back a French team here, as Europa League leaders Lyon look to secure top spot. They’ve already qualified which is a slight concern but they’ve won seven out of eight in this competition and are on a run of eight wins in a row in all competitions.
PAOK sit third in the Super League and have been good in this competition, picking up 12 points so far. Unfortunately I think a trip to Lyon is going to prove too difficult for them on this occasion.
Double Chance: Draw or Rangers (A) vs Porto @ 13/5
Another pick against the grain here, as we back Danny Rohl’s Rangers to go and get something at Porto. They are 11/1 to win this one which shows the scale of the task, but they have massively improved under the former Sheffield Wednesday manager.
Rangers are already out of this competition and so have nothing to play for, but instead of holding them back, I think they could play with a level of freedom. Rangers have now won eight games in a row in all competitions, including beating Celtic and Ludogorets, so I think they are much-improved on what we saw earlier in the season.
Porto are on the brink of the top eight, but only drew 1-1 with 10-man Viktoria Plzen last time out in this competition. Big price on backing against them in this home tie.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Real Betis (H) to beat Feyenoord @ 8/13
A couple of more straightforward picks to finish. Real Betis sit eighth and know that they will qualify automatically if they win this game, barring a freak set of results and a goal difference swing for Porto.
They have won four of their seven games in Europe this term, while Feyenoord have lost five of their last seven in this competition and are unlikely to qualify for the knockout stages.
Panathinaikos vs Roma - under 2.5 goals @ 4/6
Panathinaikos have conceded eight goals in their seven Europa League outings and manager Rafael Benitez has made them hard to beat this term. They’ve kept three clean sheets in their last five games, while Roma have seen under 2.5 goals in six of their last seven outings.
I’m not expecting fireworks in this one, even though Roma have won their last four in the UEL and look set to qualify in the top eight.
